A friend of mine is visiting her son and his family in Washington DC very soon. She is helping to plan and plant their garden and needs Pyracantha, Berberis and winter jasmine to grow against a wall.
Please can someone out there tell me of a nursery within driving distance where she can buy these?
Apparently she's been to some within c.15 miles, but didn't find this type of plant. Her son is hoping to echo some of the plantings she has in her garden here in the UK.
Hope you can help :)
Does anyone know if she would be able to take winter jasmine slips with her as there are many rooted pieces in my garden? I was assuming not, but is there only a ban on certain plants, or is it across the board?
Nurseries near Washington DC???

I would recommend the following links for anyone travelling and intending to take any plant material to the USA or the UK.

Hi all. I'm more interested in trying to find nurseries near Washington DC where these types of wall shrubs can be bought please.
philomel, you might try using the ZIP code search in Garden Watchdog. Of course, this will only show nurseries that also do mailorder, but it's a start - just find a zip code near where they'll be, and it'll show you the nearest 10 companies we have listed.
As for carrying rooted slips on a plane - well, I know a lot of things have changed since 9/11, but I carried a bag full of live plants and cuttings on a plane trip to see my mom last June, and didn't have any problems with airport security - I don't know why you would, unless you're trying to transport them to a restricted state (like California, Florida or Hawaii), or into another country.
Thanks g_v, I'll ask her what her son's zip code is. I hadn't seen that feature on the watchdog. I was just hoping that someone from the area might point us in the right direction.
She'll be coming from the UK, which is why i was thinking that transporting the slips probably isn't on.
Thanks for your thoughts Sis and Baa. Those websites look a bit formidable. Sure it'll be easier for her just to buy the plants once she's in Washington - if we can find her a nursery.

I've now searched the Watchdog by zip code and have drawn a complete blank for the shrubs needed.
Will widen the search by putting in other zips.
BUT if anyone out there can help with this PLEEEASE???
philomel, these plants aren't that unusual - any large nursery center *should* carry them - even our Home Depot and Lowe's home improvement stores have them under normal circumstances.
Here's a list (I hope the link works) of garden centers near Washington DC - without a particular ZIP code I'm not sure how close these are: http://www.switchboard.com/bin/cgidir.dll?MEM=1&FUNC=FORMATSEARCH&cid=180&C=Garden+Centers&L=&A=&T=Washington&s=DC&TYPE=Search+near+location&SAS=0&Search.x=45&Search.y=9 (Let me know if the link doesn't work, and I'll try again.)
If this list doesn't help, here's another thought - she might try mailordering them ahead of time - the only downside is they will be fairly small compared to what you can purchase locally.
That's brilliant. Thanks so much g_v.
Certainly these shrubs are very common over here. I was wondering whether that was different in the states, but of course GW has all the choice nurseries with more unusual items.
Thanks again. Their zip is 20024, but are prepared to drive 20 miles or so for a good nursery. I'm sure we'll find something from the site you've linked though. Am very grateful!
:-)
