I had 2 big ash trees cut down today.
That leaves me with what used to be a 400 sq ft shade garden now is a 400 sq. ft sun garden.
Have alot of options; was thinking about making most of it a rose garden but planting companion plants that go well with roses. Maybe clematis and fennel.
Any ideas??

Shade to Sun
Paul, how about some peonies? Peonies and roses seem to go well together :)
For some lower plantings, I like the look of 'Big Betony' Stachys (not the fuzzy lamb's ear variety) with roses. Also, chives are *supposed* to be a good companion plant for roses - I've not tried it personally, so I can't tell you for sure.
Some Salvia farinacea can look really nice with the pink to red roses, as can some of the blue-hued veronicas.
Thanks Terry
I love peonies and never thought of them.

I'm jelous. I'm been trying to talk DH into taking down a couple of our trees... and I haven't had much luck. What used to be a sunny garden for me has gradually turned to a shade garden.
