Rudbeckia Maxima

Pineville, LA(Zone 8b)

Can any of you help me find Rudbeckia Maxima plants that aren't so expensive? I have tried without success to raise them from seed and would like to find plants that I can afford - the plants I've found on the web are from $6 - $8 each. Plugs or tubes would be fine.

Thanks, Grits

Thanks, Ruby - I visited sexybloomers site, and will certainly be ordering from them! Wow! $1.00 plants! The Rudbeckia they offer is not the "maxima". The maxima has large leaves like cabbage and grows 6 to 10'.

It's an old heirloom-type plant that is becoming very popular again. As most gardeners do, I'm dying for it! Sent an email to them re would they consider growing it.
Thanks, Grits

Grits,
Did you give the Rudbeckia maxima a period of cold? If not you need to. BTW where did you find the Rudbeckia maxima? I have been looking for seeds.

In Jelitto's catalog it says if the seed doesn't germinate with in 2-3 weeks a cooling period of 2-4 weeks is recommended. Someone sent me a few seeds in a trade. If I have luck germinating them I'll let you all know.

Thanks for the feedback. Guess what? I checked those that I planted (it seems like weeks ago), and one (just one so far) has come up!!!! They have been sitting under the grolight for a loooooooog time.

I pray that gardening teaches me patience, ha. Trudi is sending me some more seed, and surely, surely, I'll have some success.

I have about 1 year experience in gardening, and hope that you'll be patient with me. I don't know things like species, genus, etc. But I'm learning! Thanks in advance for overlooking my "unlearned gardening state".

Hey Grits,
I wanted to let you know my rudbeckia maxima germinated. I put the seeds in a moist paper towel and chilled them for about 4 weeks. After moving them back to room temp they started germinating in about a week. I'd bet they would do well using the winter sown method too. Did yours make it?
