Clematis?

I purchased some Clematis from BJs wholesale and there were vines growing out of the box. The box said "If I am growing its ok to pinch me back" I planted them according to the directions (didnt pinch it back) in a one gallon pot and put them by a window. I wanted to get a head start.
Well a couple have a bud on them and it looks like they will be blooming soon.
Question is should I pinch this bud off or leave it?
thanks

Janice, If it is going to bloom and you are happy with the size of the vine, I would leave it like it is so you can enjoy your flowers. Clematis is a very fast growing vine,we plant them in the ground here. I never pinch mine back. Lisa

This vine is just a baby. Its only about one and half feet tall! Its still in my house in a pot. If I leave the bud will that stunt the growth.
( I know I am PATHETIC!! i AM SO NEW AT THIS!!) LOL

Your plant will not grow as large if allowed to bloom the first season, but I'd let it bloom just once to be sure it was the variety that I thought it was, and then pinch off any subsequent blooms before they got started too much. The size of the root system will determine the size of your plant, and if it doens't concentrate all of it's energy into the bloom, it will make bigger roots, making the plant bigger, sooner. Since your baby is potted into a one gallon pot, keep close watch on it to decide if you need to pot it up to a larger size. Although clematis like their roots cool and their leaves warm, keeping one in a pot it's first season in a cool climate can often result in a bigger, stronger plant than you'd get if you planted it in the ground, because of the soil temperature differences between a potted plant and the cold soil of early spring that can retard plant growth. Of course, if you live in a warm climate, the ground warms up early enough that you have to really worry about shading the roots instead of keeping them warm!

I just got some clematis from Cosco, and was dissapointed at how small they were, they were in those little jiffy netting pots packed in peat. I put them in gallon pots, and they are so pathetic looking. I was wondering also If I should pinch back, they are only 4-5 incles tall. If I understand what is being said up above, I should leave it in the pot, and not allow it to bloom this year. Is my understanding correct? Please let me know.
I absolutely love this place, you get so much useful information. Thanks to all who contributes.

Once they start to grow you just let them do there thing, some need to be cut back in the Autumn, others in the spring, most dont need a thing, just plant it and leave it, do you have the latin name for your plant ?.

I just know that one is Nelly Moser and one is Ramona.
I pinched off the bud. Looked like the color was supposed to be.
I bought mine about 2-3 weeks ago and they had a pretty good start already. I had them potted for about 1-1/2 weeks then realized I potted them wrong. I re did them ( mound and then arranged the roots to fit over it) and they are doing well. The roots were pretty impressive. About 8 inches long and lots of them. Nice and healthy.

I should wait until danger of frost is over-right? Did I do the wrong thing in getting it going indoors? I figured I would give it a head start.

Janice, the Nelly moser one dosent like to be on a south facing wall, it will big 6" purple flowers on it, nice one that is, and it need to be pruned in spring, about knee high, i dont know the other one though.
