Dear Dave! (Spell Checker)

(Zone 5a)

I was hoping that you would add a spell check here for us non spellers, which I think that I am the queen of. It would help out a lot, thanks for your consideration....did I spell that right....chesss I need HELP!

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

But that's half the fun Windsurffer isn't it? Who cares if spelling or grammar aren't perfect, it's the contact and communication that counts. We'd lose the spontaneity (goodness that one looks strange - but you know what i mean LOL!)
Anyway, think of the continuous indigestion the poor spellchecker would have with all those funny names. And i don't just mean the scientific ones!!
:)

Oh Windsurfer,I do know what you mean but my dear, that's the fun and charm that is the ingredient of such special conversations we all enjoy here' For me and many others,we don't care of ones' verbal perfectionestic(did I make another new word, lol?)script,we're family''' Please rethink and consider what we all would be denied''PPPPLLLLLLLEAASE'''IMHO Sis':D

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hey, Windy - these guys are right.

But if you really want to be picture-perfect in your spelling, why not compose your post in Word, spell-check it, then copy the text into the reply box here at DG and post it? Another thing you could do is download a freeware spell-checker that works in whatever window you happen to have open. I know they're out there -- If you want help looking for one, e-mail me. :)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

windsurffer; just do as I do. Blame the misspelled words on your keyboard. Works for me and I have gotten away with it so far. Well, I guess everyone knows now.
Honest, honest. It's my keyboard thhat can't spell. Really it is. I keep telling my DH that we need new keyboard but he isn't falling for it.......shoot!

My dear,we are all only human. We all make mistakes, so join in with the rest of us and just be yourself just like you always been. Love ya just the way you are. If none of us never made mistakes, then human we wouldn't be,now would we?

Thank you all for understanding and not criticizing, it make me feel a lot better. Now the frist snicker I hear...I will send such a gust of WIND down to whip you around a little bit lol.

Is there any free spell checkers out there that will work with any form?

Told you,it's the key board. Sometimes the letters are just in the wrong place. Who needs a spell checker? It's more fun this way. We all need a good laugh sometimes at our missteaks.

Moorestown, NJ(Zone 7b)

Just my .02 worth, but this is a feature I've wanted since the beginning. Normally I'm an excellent speller, but old eyes and fingers tend to do other things! :-) I usually don't find my mistakes until I've reached the "PREVIEW" pane.......think that having a spell checker would be a great tool. Thanks Dave.

(Zone 5a)

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Mom2 I really appreciate the support. I know that we are all making fun of the way we have spelling errors but I am really serious about the request. It is so frustrating to have to wonder or not know how to spell what you want to say, so DAVE PLEASE CONSIDER IT.

Hmm, I just realized that I never did reply to this thread. This subject has come up several times in the past and the spell-checker request threads start to run together.

When I say no, it is usually because I have one of three reasons:

Reason 1: It's impossible to do.

Reason 2: It is not justifiable.

Reason 3: I don't want to do it (for whatever reason).

So, whenever I say no to something, you are virtually guaranteed that one of the above 3 reasons is applied here.

In this case, it's rule #2. As of this very moment, when weighing the cost vs. benefits to a spell checker, the costs far outweigh the benefit. The level of work that will go into a spell checker is tremendous, and would take me at a week of solid programming to get it together.

During that same amount of time, I can do a lot of other wonderful things that would benefit DG far more than a spell checker.

Now, one day someone may develop a piece of code that I can just drop right in and - bam - we'd instantly have a spell check. That may indeed happen one day, and in such a case DG will be one of the first sites to have a spell check.

Until then, however, I just can't devote the resources that would be needed to put this together. I wish that was not the answer I had to give. :(

Dave

(Zone 5a)

Dave I didn't understand all the programing or the finances that would be needed to add a spell checker here.
I am glad that you took the time to answer my question because I had no idea if you had seen it, so now I know and some answer is better than no answer even if I am still keeping my toes and fingers crossed lol.
Thanks

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

I have found that a dictionary still is my best bet when it comes to spelling. I try to keep several around the house as the old mind just isn't working as well as it once did. A necessity at the computer desk is my trusty dictionary. Now, if I can just make myself use it all the time!!!

I didn't know either how much work it is to put in such a thing. WOW! Much more complicated than I would have thought. So many features available everywhere I never think about the work or expense involved but it's good to know.

Myself, I don't mind one bit when anyone makes mistakes...sometimes I look back on my own posts and am "emmbarrasssed" at my own "tipoes" and "booboobs"! In other peoples posts, I find mistakes or funny phrases cute and endearing and so human but in my own, I just think I look harebrained!

We are hardest on ourselves. Friends don't mind.....! I take pleasure in the colloquial speech and sayings that differ from my own. I must say "someone" got me good as their thread header was "11 year old boobs” and I thought WHAT THE ?????? could this very normally, very nice person be posting ???? ( and I’m afraid nosiness made me peek) I got a real kick out of it seeing they meant boo boos....made me smile at my own misunderstanding!

(Zone 5a)

Lol Mummyof4 that is a cute story, but like you said we are very hard on ourselves.

Wind (YOU POSTED YOU HAD YOUR FINGERS CROSSED) uncross those fingers before you start posting and you will become a much better speller. It will do away with those fat finger miscues that I do even with my fingers uncrossed.
