The long hard slog of Spring is just a couple of months away here and the mid winter-spring flowering plants have just started to show.
The Snowdrop flowers deigned to make an appearance last week along with a few self sown Crocus. A couple of Hyacinths are just showing a spike, a red Polyanthus, a seedling Cowslip and the Lesser Celandines are budding. The Daffodils are mainly March flowering types so a little while until the garden seems to be in flower. There are some catkins already on the trees in the woods out back.
Whats flowering in the garden for you now?
February Whats Flowering now?
Nice thought Baa! All I have is snow right now. Well there's not too much snow... hopefully it'll be gone early this year. (knock on wood)
Awwww Poppysue I hope it clears up soon for you!
Meanwhile i think the only addition to last months list for me are the snowdrops. The sarcococca's still doing it's bit to keep winter at bay - the scent's fantastic! Was talking today to someone who has wintersweet, that's on my wish list. My father grew it, and i remember how gorgeous it was.
Winter (February) Daphne is in bloom and very fragrant, Helleborus are blooming, and the forsythia is beginning to bloom. Daffodils and tulips are up but not blooming. I LOVE it :-)
Our daffodills are up but not blooming yet. However, a mile down the road, I saw a house with hundreds of daffs - all in full yellow bloom.
Our forsythia is blooming. Is it the right time for these things to be happening? It just feels a little early for it.
It's early Dave....daffs here just coming up,
"eyes"
i have snowdrops, paperwhites, daffs and hyacinth blooming.
the maple tree is sending out buds and i noticed that quite a few of plants are breaking dormancy, brugs, ruellas, lantana, wisteria, salvias, mondarda, gingers, clematis, the list seems endless. the roses have put out tons of new growth, although i dont think it lost much over the winter we had.
im worried also, spring has come way too early. and something else, the fire ants...wow, there are a gazillion of them already, i think were in for a bad year for them too
way off topic, i know
jen
I've got a few iris reticulata and crocus just starting to bloom, buds on the forsythia. Lots and lots of plants starting to send up green!
Some of our thrift is in bloom.(pink) The forsythia started a week ago. The daffodills are up but not blooming as well as the star of bethlehem. Oh yeah crocus is blooming also.
We have a giant sunflower that has put out new growth as well as lily of the nile, english dogwood, several varities of lilies. We have blanket flower, shasta daisy and purple cone flower that never died back as well as new sprouts from seeds that self sowed. Oh yeah and mexican hats that has put out new growth. Noticed buds on the fig tree today. Also found 5 surprise lilies that had peeked out of the ground.
Hyacinths's, Snowdrops, Daff's. Iris, Plum trees, Dianthus,
Quince, Roses with lot's of new growth, Brugs coming out of ground already, Morning Glories re-seeded all over, and lot's of my garden annuals have already re-seeded..They are about an inch or so tall. Tiny tomato plants all over the place too, from the mother plants..I will try to save some of them..
My hellebores are blooming along under the snow and the johnny-jump-ups as well and a primrose that has bloomed through the whole winter. No sight of daffs or crocus yet and I'm not sure I'll have snowdrops this year - they were in the area that we dug out for the new rock garden and may have all just disappeared. We have snow and frozen ground and this week is supposed to be cold and snowy.
Oh I am sooooo jealous! Nothing is coming up yet..and I am so anxious..we still have snow on the ground..Can't really expect to see anything till the end of March...when we will see some crocus and daffs appear hopefully.
Forgot chaenomeles "Crimson and Gold"
Vic, which daphne do you have - Laureola? My laureola and laureola philippi (lovely little thing) are both flowering now and wonderfully scented. The other 'spring' daphne i can think of is mezereum, also scented but deciduous. Never sure if i like it's flowers on the bare branches.
Oh I wish I knew...I'm such an idiot about the proper names. The leaves are white and green and the blooms are pale pink to lavender. EXTREMEY Fragrant. As in a gardenia. I'll see if I can get a picture for you. I'll wait until they open some more. They are just now beginning to open. They usually bloom until the end of April. The lady at the nursery where we bought them said she has propogated hers several times successfully so I'm thinking of trying that this year. I hope it works.
Wow, that sounds gorgeous vic!! The only one with variegated leaves that i know just has a golden edge to the leaf - odorata. Get really confused with the zones, but guess 7 is pretty warm now?
We now have jonquils, hellebores, tuberous comfrey, sweet violets, lesser celandines and periwinkles flowering now. I forgot to list the Vibernum and Jasminum as being in flower. Primula veris, denticulata, Erica and the wallflowers have buds too.
A small pot of soil I bought for 49p has sprouted a Delphinium, ahh well I'll give them another go for one more year.
My maple is blooming, narcis and daffodills too, iris ae coming up and growing, mums are growing, the buds on my wisteria are getting bigger, and my asparagus are starting to pop up too.
I've got tulips and jonquils coming up, about an inch high so far. Nothing else coming to life yet.
I have a snowblower and a shovel in full bloom with an icepick fading fast and ready to be put away.
Vic, my Daphne odora is flowering now so i'l try and take a photo to see if it's anything like yours - but not digital so will have to wait for end of film and to get it developed.
Kathleen, pleease, what are johnny-jump-ups?? i know i've heard that name before, lol, but can't think what for.
Also flowering in my garden now:
prostrate rosemary, oriental hellebores, crocuses, snowdrops, pulmonaria, chaenomeles 'Crimson and Gold', winter jasmine, and 2 sp of sarcococca.
Buds/shoots particularly noticeable on honeysuckle, roses, daylilies. Oooooh just about everything's moving - soooo exciting.
But no asparagus :( jcf, must try growing that again - soooo tasty, yum :)
Philomel - Heart's ease or Viola tricolor. Right now, snow is blooming fast and furious, but I did notice yesterday before it started that the iris reticulata are up about two inches, little green sticky looking things in the frozen solid ground. Gives one hope!
Thanks Kathleen for putting me out of my agony, of course, knew i should know. and it was IRRITATING me LOL :)
Ah well, there is a bit of a language difference! We yanks think we speak English........LOL
Everyone here listed plants we can not grow down South. These are what blooming now, taken today http://davesgarden.com/showthread/191088.html.
