Last summer I bought a small pot of curry at the farmers market and put it in a planter on the patio. Here it is February and it's still green. What can I do with it? I've used curry powder before, but haven't the faintest clue as to using fresh. It smells so good, there's bound to be something it would be good in.If anyone has any ideas,I would appreciate it.
Anyone ever use fresh curry?
.....oooooooo...stir fry.....lamb dishes.....eggs...rice!

I love curried rice, but I thought it had to be from buds or blooms. Isn't the spice a blend of something?
.....don't know, but I'm sure Dinu will know!

If you're refering to a curry plant, my Indian co-worker grows it at home and his wife uses the whole leaves in a variety of dishes, kinda like you would use bay leaves. They're completely edible especially when they're rather tiny (less than 1" in length.)
ginlyn, curry powder has nothing at all to do with the curry plant! Curry plant, Helichrysum, is named for the aroma of the leaves, but is not used to make curry powder, a blend of many herbs and spices. Curry plant is not normally used as a curry subsitute, as the leaves lose their aroma when heated, and have a bitter taste, although some add to soups and stews, sparingly. John
John, that was what I thought I knew, but then decided I was nuts. Thanks for the enlightenment.
Thanks everyone, for your input.Pardancanda,if it's going to have a bitter taste,I don't think I'll even mess with it.I'll just enjoy the smell as I walk by ... The plant I have looks a lot like rosemary,in fact,so much so that I have to smell them to tell the difference.
ginlyn, you could 'try' some... I am not a big fan of curry flavor myself, you might like it. The flowers are supposed to dry nicely, being in the 'everlasting' Helichrysum family. The curry plant is supposed to be hardy only to 10 degrees, mine survived to 10 below a few years back. It is growing under the worst possible conditions of hot, dry, sandy soil, and thriving. I like the looks of the plant, and enjoy pinching off a bit to enjoy the fragrance in the garden. But those yellow-mustard flowers I could so without on such a lovely silver-leaved plant. John
Curry leaves (Murraya koenigii) http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/index.html is NOT the same as curry plant [Helichrysum stoechas] http://www.beyond.fr/flora/curry.html
curry leaves are always used Fresh in Southern Indian cooking for some authentic Indian flavor. curry leaves is a tree.
curry powder is a British invention to imitate the flavor of Indian cooking. it is a blend of different spices like cumin, coriander, black pepper, chiles, fenugreek and turmeric for yellow coloring.
curry plant is use as flavoring but is not edible. it has strong scent of curry too, but is not a true Indian curry. curry plant is a low growing herb.
hope this clarifies some of the confusion on curry!
Gosh...I'm truley learning a lot from you gardeners. Thanks so much for all this info. The next time I need to know something,I'll know just where to ask.You guys are "Great"
MVR you're right curry powder was invented by British army in India to disguise the flavour of rancid meat for the soldiers. A lot of British Asians have come up with some wonderful dishes based on Indian meals but with the Anglo-Saxon taste bud in mind, we do love curry in this country.
I went into the GC today and saw a whole tray of Helichrysum italicum, ran wandered over and brushed the whole lot over with my hand and moved quickly away while poor Mother walked straight into the wafting scent ... bit of luck I'm too old to be put across the knee ;)
Ginlyn... apparently what u got is curry plant [Helichrysum stoechas], not the curry leaves. i have been searching to get a cutting or plant of curry leaves [Murraya koenigii] for sometime now. wishfully hoping to come across one one day soon.
u're funny and naughty Baa! u maybe old enough to be put across the knee, but i bet u're Mom was on ur case all the way home! ROTFLOL.
MaVieRose, I could try and get some of the Murraya for you from my co-worker. He'd be more than happy to share, I'm sure.
Oh thank you Amaryllisgal =)! that is deeply appreciated. whoopeeee!!!! i can send u priority postage. pls. let me know when u are ready.
The curry powder I buy at a seasoning place here has Tumeric, Coriander, Paprika, pepper, Fenugreek, cumin, ginger cloves, celery seed caraway seed. And I use it mixed with Catchup and use it with Brat's. Thats the way I liked it in Germany. :)
