Anybody grow radicchio?

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

This plant is listed in Park's catalog on the salad fixin's page. It looks almost like a red cabbage with wide white ribs. I've been told it is eaten raw chopped up in salad. Has anyone grown it? How hardy is it? Any other ideas for eating it?

it's more like a lettuce than a cabbage MaryE. Italian i think. Strongish clean flavour with a hint of bitterness.
Good with a salad dressing, and/or mixed in with other leaves. Expect others here have much more experience of it than i do.

Just spoke to my brother who's married to an Italian (yes rad. is Italian) Apparently it's a form of chicory and comes in a number of varieties which can be cooked differently. Many are finely shredded, dressed and used raw. Others can be grilled....the list goes on. Enjoy :>)

Glad to see this post. Several yrs back I planted a very large assortment of various seeds...lettuces, greens, etc...I included things like corn salad, radicchio, many others I can't seem to recall. Now every yr I'm stymied by a particular plant that pops up here and there. It has a rosette growth pattern, some of the plants have green leaves with either a white or red vein down the middle...other plants have reddish/bronze leaves with a green rib down the middle. Right now it is volunteering.
Would radicchio have that growth habit? I can find pics of
radicchio that are headed up, just can't find one of the younger plant. Does anyone have a pic, or know a source for a picture?
