Guess what I did today????

Actually, I can't take the credit...I saw it on the website called "You Grow Girl". I think I found the site when Go_Vols had us emailing people to have them add DG to their websites. Anyway, I had dd save me all her aquafina water bottles. I put them in Dh's vice, and hacksawed the bottoms off. Then I unscrewed the caps and drilled a small hole in the caps using Dh's drill press. He's so nice about sharing his toys. Anyway, screw the cap back on, and bury it by plants that require a lot of water, like hostas, etc. I had to try it out so I planted one behind a rose bush and poured water in. Works GREAT. I have seen them advertised in garden catalogs too for ridiculous prices but they leave them sticking out of the ground. I buried mine except for a couple inches. We'll see how it goes, could end up being a breeding ground for mosquitoes or something. Anyway, it was fun and wanted to share it with you. vic

How innovative of you Vic - as you say 'kewl'....way to go!!

The mosquitoes probably won't be a problem if you just add a little dishwashing soap, and it won't hurt the plant. Or you could add oil like olive or corn oil, just a film over the top.

I have a friend that uses this method of watering in the garden and he swears by it. He also likes that you can add liguid fertilizer and get it right to the roots. He covers the top of his with fine mesh (landscape cloth or chese cloth) using a couple wraps of electrical tape. This keeps out pests, dirt, and debris so the hole in the bottom doesnt clog up.

Vic, what a great idea. I have several plants that need extra water, think I'll try this idea also.
Time, good idea on putting some cheesecloth over it, mine would probably be full of dirt.
