Fire under the hollyhocks

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

One of my tipster books claims that burning a ring of shredded paper at the base of your hollyhock plants will kill rust spores. Think I can do this without burning my garden & house down? Wonder if it would work....

Sounds an interesting idea. imagine it's the smoke that's sposed to do the trick. If so a more efficient way would be to use the kind of smoker a beekeeper has. then u could direct the smoke, or at least ensure you don't fry the whole plant......mmmm crispy hollhock, wonder how that would go down

Sounds as though it might work - anything is worth a try!!

Yes, I do love them, particularly Althea rugosa (lemon yellow) but rust's a nightmare

I've found spraying them early and often with chamomile tea makes a huge difference in the rust, but it is a pain when they get to 15 feet!

i will try it-I luv to play with fire!
one yr i was cleaning up-LOL-I decided instead of raking anymore under the trees(

Philomel - does the a.rugosa get rust like the rosea? I read that it wasn't as rust prone. I started a few from seeds last year but havn't seen them bloom yet.

poppysue, sorry missed u're question. True, rugosa aren't as rust prone, that's one of the reasons i like them. They still get it a bit, but nowhere near as bad as the others. They don't grow quite as tall either. Got my seed originally from seed swap of a society. They do seem to do a bit of crossing with others though - one result was lemon yellow shading to purply pink in the centre of the flower. Different :-)
