Tree ferns
Alan, How hardy are they? Would they take the humidity over here do you think?
Louisa, these grow in New Zealand and Australian forrests, humidity is high there, they love it, as for being hardy, i keep mine in the back of my shed in winter, with no other protection, and they are ok, they can take a little frost, but the fronds will most likely burn off, but if you live where frosts are rare, they will thrive, Dicksonia Antarctica is the hardier of them all, I cant believe that there are 1040 memebers here, and no one has one, criminal that is, they are wonderful plants.
Alan.
I will look them up because I do love ferns.
Whats the winter climate like where you are, or going /.
Alan.
I'm still going to be in Virginia. Normally the weather is just great. Short, mild winters, a beautiful Spring and the worst months are July and August because of the humidity. Autumn is glorious. Virginia is very green. I think I will try and post a photo tomorrow of the area we will be living in so that you can get an idea of the terrain. However, this winter has been very long and one of the coldest by Virginia standards, but no by UK standards. I felt the winters back home were much harsher.
The winters been the same here, its the worst one four thirty odd years, its been the same all over the nothern temperate zones, siberia got down to -62*, but i think if you get what you consider a normal winter there you should be able to grow them quite well, i can always give any info to help.
Alan.
Thanks matey!
I have been looking for tree fern!Any cuttings your looking to get rid of? Jen
Sorry Jen, this one of those that your cant do anything like that with, you have to get the whole plant, or try spores, but bare in mind these things only grow one inch a year, and spores may take two or three years to develop, sorry.
Alan.
