Would it be alright to start these in a miniature, heated greenhouse right now.....so that they will be bigger and fuller by mid March - April?

Also how about Fushias...as they prefer and require a cooler temperature.
balsam seeds........
Hi "eyes", I grew Balsam Impatiens from seed last year, and they grow big fast! I am in zone 6/7, but I'll bet my 7 is far different from yours in TX. I wouldn't even start them until mid-March! Just my experience... John
I second John's advice..I started some in February last year, and they were very vigorous growing plants, a good 8-10" tall when I set them out in late April. I'd wait until around 6 weeks before last frost to start them, and PINCH THEM MERCILESSLY to force branching. Otherwise, you'll wind up with a single huge (nearly as large as my wrist!) stem 30+ inches tall.
i just throw the seeds on the ground in spring and they get really bushy and no transplanting
I was going to say the same Dori!! I have grown this and was constantly digging up the babies!! Plenty of plants for swapping eyes!!
Besides pinching them, I've noticed that they branch off beautifully when the soil is not hard which allows easy spreading of their soft fleshy roots. Yes, they multiply easily on its own.
Thanks for letting me know guys........now just to sneak around the corner and plant some in a unsightly lot...
