Hi all, when is a good time to dig up spring blooming bulbs for trading and just to move them???? I think I have Alium drumstick coming up all over the yard (and something else too) This is my first spring at my new house. I have about 3 different groups of about 15-20 bulbs in circles in the back yard. (unfortunately its where the kids play). When we first came to see the house before buying it I saw some surprise lillies in the back also, but I forget where now. I think i have Crocus popping up all over the front yard also. I love the surprises. If anyone can help with my question I would greatly appreciate it!! Julie
when should I dig up bulbs
Generally I wait until the leaves begin to turn yellow. However if the bulbs are in harms way, as in the play area, it might be better to move them early even if they do not bloom the following year.
Later this year I will be digging many daffodils.
Thank you so much for the info!!! Julie
I dig up and move daffodils all the time while they are in bloom without any problems. (Raiding abandoned homes) The trick is to get enough of a soil ball around them so that you don't disturb the feeder roots---just like transplanting anything else. They always stay in bloom, and bloom the next year too. That way, it's easy to arrange them where you want them or fix a mistake before they go dormant and you try to remember where they were.
