Sure Signs of Spring???!!!

(Zone 9a)

You know it's Spring when you have to start dodging the snakes and tornadoes.

Yesterday, DH whacked the 4' cottonmouth that had apparently had been hibernating under the front steps.

Today, we were running for cover from tornadoes spawned from nasty thunderstorms.

Watch the skies and watch your step....Spring is here!

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

I killed a big spider in the bathroom tonight. They are waking up. We are to get more snow tomorrow, winter is still here in Iowa. Ugh!!!!!! It has been a loonng Winter.

Moorestown, NJ(Zone 7b)

Gee this thread sure made me glad to not be living in Altus Oklahoma anymore! HATED those tornadoes (and spiders, and scorpions!)...........as much as I detest Jersey drivers, it's a lot nicer of an introduction to Spring here.......all I have is my apricot hyacinths poking their heads out! :-)

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

...and the geps. They are coming out all over. My little one is so scared of them and she has never gotten stung..but I guess she sees me running from them! LOL! On the 'nicer' side we are seeing June bugs and mosquito hawks. Lisa

Wentworth, SD(Zone 4a)

We are starting to see the tops of cornstubble and bare dirt in the fields and ditches. The night before last, I could smell the air. It smelled like moist earth. One of the best smells ever! Am I sick or what?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

The trees are blossoming here, the daffs are finally through, and the geese are returning.

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

The frogs are croaking again. I saw my first hummingbird of the season the other day. Trees and daffs are blooming. We haven't had a frost in almost 3 weeks. I was even excited to see the first flies!! But I soon got over that one :)
It's really SPRING!!!

It doesnt feel like spring here today, its been ok most of this week, but the wind is freezing cold again now, but whenever spring does decide to take hold, we dont have to dodge spiders, snakes or tornados, just rain, rain and more rain, and if we are really lucky, its not cold rain, Lisa, what are geps ?, thats a new one to me.

Alan.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

geps are a cajun wasp....paper wasp to regular folks! :-)

Spring is here! Last weekend we went to our farm to do some work and the crocus's were showing their pretty purple, yellow and white faces. The easter lilies were popping up, some of the roses are getting their leaves, the hens and chicks are already popped up (and have been for three weeks now!). Our trees are budded and some almost open, except the oaks. At our house now the tulips are coming up along with the easter lilies and hyacinths (or however that one is spelled). Robins are everywhere. Oh and we heard the frogs and bugs late last saturday night! What beautiful music!

Lorain, OH(Zone 5b)

I checked my ladybugs in the attic (they winter there, this is thier 11th winter in my attic) they are not doing much yet, I was thinking about putting some in the house plants. We had snow today, I bar-b-qued a turkey breast anyway. The crocuses will bloom in 2or 3 days. Spring is here!! :)

Joshua Tree, CA(Zone 8b)

Gardener Mick , I love that wet earth smell. They cant bottle it, can they? My big Joshua Tree is Blooming these blooms are 5 inches wide and 8 inches long. Will take a picture. Crickets in the evening. And it was warm enough to barbeque some chicken a couple of days ago. I have a rosy boa that lives in my yard. He or she is a good snake.(Eats rattlesnakes) But I have to keep my eyes and ears peeled for any rattlers. But it could get cold again here. It has many times before.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Crocus, daffs and hyacinths are blooming here. Daylilies are about a foot high and hostas are sprouting. The Bradford pear trees are blooming, so I know it will frost again. It always does when they bloom. The purple martins are back, but haven't seen any hummers yet. I was so happy, I wrote a poem:
Spring has sprung
The grass has riz
This is where the birdies is

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Calalily, you are so talented! What a lovely poem :-) Lisa

Dang it Calalily, I was going to describe the TN spring. ;-)

The forsythia is fiercely yellow, my crabapples are blooming nicely, one of my neighbors even has a flowering dogwood in bloom already!

The daffodils are, of course, all in full bloom. I do have a crocus with a very nice pink bloom. Daylilies are definitely nice and bushy, and the tulips are about 3 inches tall.

The bradford pears are in FULL BLOOM and beautiful. The willow trees are all a very nice green, and the Red Maples are already forming some very nice leaves.

My broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, and iceberg lettuce transplants have been doing great in the garden for the past 2 weeks, and the peas and 4 kinds of lettuce seeds have already germinated!

Yes, Spring has arrived in East TN!! :)

Dave

Hey Calalily, I just noticed you're in Powell! You're right up the road from me!! I'm in Lenoir City (ignore that the system says Loudon). My sister lives in Powell. It's great to have another Knoxvillian here. :)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Dave
Yeah, just up the road. You will have to come see my daylilies when they bloom.
I meant to have a veggie garden. It's just that I had to get in to check out DG and forgot to plant the veggie plants I brought home. And now you are bragging about your's and it 's all your fault I don't have any!!
Seriously, I put a cutting garden in where the veggies go. I do have onions and lettuce in the flower bed and was trying to decide whether to plant some broccoli or another daylily. Calalily

Sounds good to me, Calalily. We'll make an afternoon trip up there when everything is in bloom - just let me know.

You're welcome to come down to Whitinger Hill and check out our farm (Dave's Real-Life Garden) :) once summer comes into full swing. We're going to have some SERIOUS plants going on here come mid-summer.

Best,
Dave

(Zone 9a)

Oh well, OK, since this is going to be a bragging fest....Lady Banks, salvia greggii, rudbeckia hirta are blooming now. L.D.Braithwaite has big fat buds about to open.

Not in my yard, but in the neighborhood.....wisterias and azaleas are in full bloom.

I LUUUUUV Spring :-)

(Zone 9a)

Let's see...here out in my California garden my peach tree is in full bloom, not to mention every other tree in the county (achoo!). My weeping cherry tree is one gorgeous show of pale pink flowers (achoo!), my pink jasmine totally covering my arbor is a mass of pink buds which will open to very fragrant pure white flowers (achoo!). Salvias are flowering already, as are some of my rose bushes. Cannas are coming up and growing fast. Lilies are almost all up and some are already 3' tall now. Hyacinths have already bloomed and are now dying back already. Mums are getting huge. Have to say that I'm lucky enough to get two full flushes from all my mums, once in the early spring and again in the fall.

The lawns are turning the most gorgeous spring green (achoo!) and the front lawn is the best in the neighborhood (achoo!). I've got buds on the African Irises, allysum in full bloom (achoo!) and all the Lamb's Ears are starting to take off like gangbusters.

The weeds are growing faster then I can keep up with them (achoo!), my resident doves are back in my far back garden, the hummers are dancing in the sprinklers, and the other birds wait for the bugs to come out of hiding from the watering. Brugmansia's are putting out their leaves as well as flower buds. Nasturtiums are getting huge and starting to show their first flowers.

But most importantly, I'm starting to come out of hibernation myself (achoo!).

'Tain't life grand when spring has sprung? 'Scuse me now while I go blow my nose.....
