For us here in zone 8 in ga we will be planting potatoes around feb. 15th. and garden peas not too long after that. then corn and peanuts by the end of March. In there will go in the radish and the onions, leeks and greens. I can hardly wait. I really must get out into the gardena nd get it ready.
Before all this I must recover the greenhouse and start peppers and tomatoes. and don't forget those flowers for early spring bloom. Boy I am getting tierd talking about it.
How long before you get geared up???????
planting time only 7 weeks away.
Janet, our last average frost day is May 5, although often get an early touch of spring, will be looking at catalogs for a few months!!!!
Our last frost day is usually in early May too although we may be lucky and be able to plant out with protection in April. I will be sowing a lot indoors between now and April though.
I plan to spend new Years getting some seeds planted indoors. If I want blooms on the lisianthus, I need to start them soon and the pansies will bloom earlier if I get them started now, too. Serious planting here doesn't usually begin until the last week in May or early June. I will have sweet peas and garden peas planted probably in mid April, depending on the weather of course. I have a stack of catalogs that have been sitting there calling to me through Christmas, I now can start the serious looking and planning.
Last frost here is May 15, but I always try to push it a bit, and cover things at night if needed. Will start some seeds by Feb. 1... and wish I had more space for shelving and lights for seedlings. As it is, I have 2 shelves with 4' lights, using aquarium bulbs which are full-spectrum and cheaper than most lights sold as 'full-spectrum'.
A neighbor gave me some homemade row covers. he took and made a retangular fram woth 2x4's. then cut holes at an angle and inserted pvc pipe into it making hoops. then I cover them with plastic as needed and then i have great 4'x8' row covers lightweight to move and they are about 3' tall in the center. they work great.
I'm definitely ready to be back in thegarden. Have already started seeds and will be sowing every week until I direct sow in May. I "winter-sowed" a bunch of stuff in the fall and it's doing great. A lot of the seeds I'm doing now are "winter-sown" as well. I'm excited - I love it..... :-) vic
JCF, I've never tried potatoes, can you tell me how you plant them, and when are they ready for harvest?
I've already got some perennials started in the GH, will continue sowing each week for the next several weeks. Our last frost date is late April, and I'm planning to start my tomato seedlings for sale by mid-February.
I'm looking into lights so that I can convert my home made indoor clothes rack into a mini greenhouse so I can start sowing soon. I've several catalogs that I'm going through along with several lists from each one. Now I just have to decided what to get and what to wait until next year for. When should I start my tomatoe plant indoors?? Zone 5/6
brad_cj, I'd start the tomato plants about 6 weeks before your last frost date unless you want to start a few earlier and push your zone with some wall o'waters or other season-stretching devices. (If you do that, I'd also advise you set up the wall-o'waters, etc. a week or so ahead of time,a and let them warm up the soil a bit before you are ready to plant.
If my dates seem odd it's because I'm starting some of my tomato seeds a bit earlier to have a few larger plants to sell along with the "normal" seedling-size range.
:(
I want to move south..... our planting time is 16 weeks away.
At least I can start some plants in the basement under lights in about 6 or 7 weeks.
I plant my tomato seeds indoors April 1st. Then set them out in the garden around middle of May. Can start a bit earlier, but then need to cover them for frost protection.
Cool - so Easter Sunday will be my planting day. Now I need to write detailed instructions for DH on how to care for them while I have this baby around the 13th or so. (I better have a back up plan -- just in case)
I'm getting so impatient!!
I plant lettuce seed on Valentine's Day. I have even sown the seeds in snow and sleet as long as I have my soil worked up ahead of time. That's not so far away is it? Valentine's Day? deep sigh here.
Potatoes should be in by St. Patrick's Day here. I didn't get my potatoes planted last year and was I ever sorry.
I'm hoping to rework my herb garden and add to that.
Paulgrow,
I hear 'ya.
Melissa :-)
WE HAVE HAD FROSTS AS LATE AS JUNE 6TH. BUT MOSTLT IT'SNEAR THE END OF MAY!
i'm going to try hoop house this year so will start plants for it in feb everything else will be in by march 15 will start planting out side in april
I have a flat with 10 jaune flamme,10 cherokee purple tomatos, about 20 yellow bell peppers and 5 vietnamese basil. The flat is next to me in a sunny window because of the cold temps outside last nite. I have a mini greenhouse (unheated 5'x6') here and will be starting more seeds from time to time. Here is Spring Hill,FL.
