I will be planting at least 3 different kinds of hardy fuchsias (zone 7b/8a). I am told that they will die back down to the ground and sprout up again in the spring. That led me to assume that they bloom from new wood. But one nursery assures me that they bloom on old wood, in which case I would not remove the old (dead) wood. Who knows about fuchsias??
conflicting info about hardy fuchsias
They bloom on new wood, but the old growth usually is left in place over winter to protect the crown of the plant.

I garden in 8b my hardy fuchias die down to the ground in winter as temps warm in spring they send up new growth by July flower buds and flowers return. The cycle of hardy plants.
A number of years ago I visited a garden in Spokane, WA (Hardiness Zones 6b and 7a). They built a birm around the Fuchsias and filled it with mulch in the fall. It might be a helpful in retaining stems through winter. I'm liking a new Fuchsia to me, Fuchsia 'Genii' with yellow leaves and larger blooms than the Fuchsia magellanica cultivars.
