Store magnolia seeds, or plant them now?

Does anyone have any experience with magnolia seeds? I found a few pods in the front yard with red seeds and I'd like to try and plant a couple for my parents (my mom loves magnolia trees). Is it better to plant them now or save them for the spring? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
