My lovely German daffodils I planted in November are pushing through the soil!! What now? Does this mean they will not bloom next Spring?? The cold is coming in for a short time and then it's back to milder weather again. Surely they won't bloom now?? They can't!! They must not!!
Arghh!! My daffs are coming up!!
Louisa, they'll be alright. Mine start to come up every year about now and they just go on "hold" until spring. Sometimes the leaf tips brown out, but they will wait until spring to bloom. Actually, I've had some poking up all fall - I don't know why they do this, but they insist on doing it annually, so I've stopped worrying about them.
Louisa I too am upset with my bulbs coming up already. I'm hoping they will be fine. If not, we can cry together!! I hate this weather, I wish it would make up it's mind.
Louisa.... I guess I need to take a good walk around my garden today... I'd hate to see my bulbs (or anything else) starting to emerge now... surely some winter will be approaching sometime...
I thought that bulbs used their 'stored' energy to push up shoots, and then flowers.... and if they are doing so now, wouldn't that diminish energy for flowers next spring? I'd think we might lose a season of flowering but that the bulbs themselves would survive for another season...
We can all cry together.... I'd hate not to have spring flowering bulbs.
I agree, it would be awful not to have our daffs in the Spring but hearken to what Kathleen had to say, I'm sure she is quite right!! Keeping my fingers crossed just the same..lol!!
.......I hold off until January to plant daffs, tulips, and other bulbs.....not just for the cold period for flowering, but also to discourgage any errant rodents who have been fooled by the weather as well.
"eyes"
eyes I don't think they eat daffs - tulips and other things yes! But you make a very good point there!!
