I have 4 zucchini plants, 2 in pots and 2 in my garden. I live in Zone 8 in South Carolina. I did NOT test the soil before I planted these plants. The plants are beginning to produce small zucchinis and are about 1 inch in length, but the tips of the fruit appear mushy and brown on the ends. I never planted zucchini plants in the south, only in the northern states, that has a heavier type of soil but never had this problem with zucchini plants I’ve planted up North.
Could this be that the soil is lacking something? HELP!!
And thanks for any assistance and advice. :)
Zucchini plant problem
Squashes require pollinators which are in short supply these days. It can take several visits from several insects over the few short hours the flowers are open. Of course you need male blossoms open at the exact time.
Google hand pollination. Once you learn the technique and see squash starting to set squash vine borers will probably take down the plants. I grow under row covers and hand pollinate for as long as possible. So frustrating. Apparently the insect is a much bigger problem in home gardens than commercial ones. Good luck.
