I've seen edging for sale but my wife would prefer to not use it. I have seen some professionals use an angled cut into the ground, a sort of trench, between the planted area and the lawn grass.
I want to keep the grass from spreading into the planted area and mulch, and the plants in the planted area from spreading into the grass.
How to I proceed to make the "air gap? between the two areas?
I plan to mulch the planted area with newsprint under the mulch for weed control (see my other recent post on mulching questions) and put some rocks around the border for looks and to use up a rock collection we have when we used to have a place near a lake that had lots of various rocks.
Do I also need a plastic border around the perimeter of the planted areas, or is the air gap enough? I realize that a border might work to keep the mulch out of the air gap, but can I avoid needing to do that?
Your thoughts, if you have some experience in this area, would be appreciated.
Thanks!!!
Edging a planted and mulched area to control spread of grass and plants
I use the EGO battery operated edger to trench and keep the grass out and also use weed and grass killer for the rhizomes that are deep enough to avoid the edger's blade. Here is an example of our bed in front of the house. The Bermuda grass is just starting to grow here and will need its first mowing in a week or two but it is a grass you have to watch out for as it creeps into everything. The second photo is from July last summer and the round bed does have the heavy rubber edging (not perfectly round due to the heavy rubber material). It does not keep all the grass out since the grass can go between the connecting pieces and also under the four inch wide rubber edging. I hand pull and use a small hand hoe to work that grass out the best I can.

Thanks. I can't see it clearly but I do see what looks like the ground level being interrupted with a small trench. I might see if my Mantis edger attachment can help me out here.
