Hi everyone! I just bought a seed starter tray with the plastic lid/dome. Is it supposed to fit snugly? It's not on tight on top of the seed starter tray. There's a slight gap between the tray lip and the lid. The plastic dome feels like a plastic bottled water container. Is that okay? I thought it fit kind of loosely, but I wasn't sure if that mattered or not.
Any ideas would be helpful! :)
Seed Starter Tray and Dome Lid - Snug or Not
It is what it is. I think they should be snug but when you buy them separately as I've done then you just accept it and move on. Just make sure you check on moisture inside more often than not.
Most Jiffy mini-greenhouses fit well. The domes you buy after the fact can be loose or snug. Some of the domes yellow after a few years and start breaking down as well. I have given away yellow domes and trashed the cracked ones when they are too brittle to use.
Here is my older style domes and this one is still good - no cracks and no yellowing. It is fairly snug. And another photo with the old style.
The new style has adjustable vents but they are hard to pop on and can crack. The sides are fairly straight up which is good and seem sturdier than the old style. These do not fit snug on garden standard trays though. Here is a photo showing how they look with the top vent (there are end vents as well) and the high straight sides. You do have to pay attention to these more than the old style as they do not fit snug and will lose moisture quicker.
