I suspect I've been badly over-watering my plants and bought a water meter to try to measure the plants to get better. But I'm very unclear on how to use one.
For example, I see that tomatoes should perhaps be 6-7 on the moisture meter.
But it seems very important on how deep the probe goes and nothing I've read really clarifies how deep you should place the meter to get a reading.
If I plunge the meter to it's full depth the meter consistently reads the top of the scale (10).
If I insert the meter about an inch, it's pretty dry.
It only hits 6-7 in the maybe 2 inch deep range.
How deep should I be measuring the moisture? Is there any sort of a reference on how deep to measure various plants and what the moisture level should be at that depth?
(Sorry, I realize this is probably an embarassingly newbie question for this forum : )
Thank you!!
Chris
