How can i stop animals or birds from digging up my flowers? I'm not sure what is doing the digging, but there are often holes dug in the dirt, or newer plants completely dug up and gone. Sometimes smaller pots are tipped over, flower branches broken, and once a trellis knocked over. It seems to be happening with various different flowers. Today a succulent was dug up and gone with a pile of dirt left next to the planter.

Sounds like you might have a gopher. They've been known to pull entire plants underground. As for pots being tipped over and a trellis knocked down, that may be a larger animal like a deer, elk or moose.
For gophers, you can try getting some ultra-sonic sound stakes that are solar powered. Insert the stakes near the holes or runs. They emit a sound that some people can hear, and others can't, but it's supposed to drive the gophers out of the area. If you can hear it, it's not an unpleasant sound and it doesn't bother most people. You can order these from a gardening catalog, and sometimes from catalogs that sell home and gardening products.
For the deer, elk or moose, you can purchase predator urine in bottles, usually wolf, coyote or cougar urine, and pour it near where they've been foraging. They pick up the scent and think there's a predator in the area, and stay away.
