I saw in the Big Lots flyer a 3 shelf portable greenhouse deal for $20. Something like this one http://www.littlegreenhouse.com/rack.shtml Looks like a good deal.....
At Big Lots
Might have to check that out! Thanks, Sue!
Oh, I wish I had a Big Lots. I don't though. :( I was wondering though if there would be a way to add grow lights to this? If there was, I would try to find one of these online, as it would be small enough that I could find room for it in my small trailer house. Anybody know?
Joan, I don't know why you couldn't use those "under cabinet" fluorescent lights and attach them to the undersides of each shelf (If they don't get too hot under a cabinet, I don't know why they wouldn't work on something like this.)
It looks like it would provide a great setup for growing a lot of plants in a small space. Let us know how it turns out!
Go Vols! I too thought it would be a great setup for growing a lot of plants in a small area. I am going to check this out further. I don't have a Big Lots anywhere close, so I'm not sure if I can find something similar online that is as cheap, but I'm going surfing now. I think this may be just the thing I've been yearning for since a greenhouse is only a dream in our budget. An actual HOUSE for US is what DH is thinking of. I don't much care, I could live in a cave as long as I was warm, fed and had my garden spots. LOL!!! This coming spring I want to start growing heirloom vegetables for eating, as well as seed preservation, and since tomatoes and such need to be started indoors in this climate, I need something. I'll let you know if I find anything that works.

Joan a quick & easy grow light set up is to use one of those cheap metal shelving units and attach shop lights under each shelf with heavy wire. I scanned a picture in to my journal http://davesgarden.com/journal/viewentry/10610/index.html The shelve cost about $12 and the lights are about $8-12 each. It's not pretty but it will get your seedlings growing.
And if you want the plastic "shroud" to build up humidity, here's an idea: Walmart (and other places, I'm sure) sells heavy (7 mm) plastic, 3 feet wide x 50 feet long. I bought a couple rolls this past fall for around $3 per roll. Pieces could be cut to fit the four sides of the shelving unit, just leave plenty to tape securely on top of the unit. You could tape together the back and sides at teh corners; leave the front taped only on the top so you can roll it up to get to the plants.
Wonderful ideas! Thank you so much. I am going to check next time I'm in town and see what the prices for these items would run. I still have a couple of months to save up the money for them. I love the set up you have Sue. Looks like what I've been wanting to do. I don't care how it looks either, as it's not a permanant piece of home decor. I can take it apart and store it, and only have it up when I'm growing things in the spring. I like the idea of being able to shroud it too. I'm excited about this now. Thanks.
I have one of these things but I never thought about adding lights to it! I put all my seed flats that are germinating on it with the cover (lots of air flow from the bottom though). In the summer I put my houseplants on it & keep it on my enclosed back porch, actually they are still out there and if old man winter comes a knocking like he should have already I am going to loose them. I guess I better bring them back in.
