I need advice about an unusual planting situation. We have just had a "screen" installed to block the view of our cars in the carport from our front patio. It's an ornamental metal screen, made by a local metal artist. It has 4 spaces that accommodate small planters so I can add a few plants to the screen. The planters are necessarily small so they would need plants that don't have expansive root systems. My husband's hobby is making stoneware pots so the idea was to add a few of his products to the screen. The area is quite shady, so I need plants that take full shade. I can take the planters indoors for the winter, if necessary, but I'd rather something that can stay in place. We are in zone 7, but like many places the trend is to warmer winters.
I am thinking probably ferns, but am open to any suggestion. Can anyone recommend some good plants for me?

You might also add Muehlenbeckia to your list. I'm not sure what climate zone you're in but Hostas are always good with shade. Hakonechloa is a good shade grass that droops nicely.
Hi Aoife:
Perhaps a picture or two of the situation you've described would aid others with advice. Provide some dimensions of the proposed planting containers, too.
Hume, Va, close to Front Royal. Eastern side of the hills. Still a bit higher than DC tho. You guys grow awesome, rats, brain misfired. AH HA! Hostas. Are you hoping for evergreen plants? Maybe, Something that can be espaliered?
