Every fall I save my Canna bulbs for the following Spring. One year I had purple leafed and green leafed Cannas. I had an excess of both, so I gave some bulbs to family and friends. The following Spring I put my bulbs in pots, thinking that they were a combination of purple and green; however, only the green came up. I thought that maybe I gave all the purple leafed ones away by mistake, so I bought another purple one. In the fall, I dug out the bulbs, only this time I separated the purple from the green and labeled each bag--one green and one purple. So, this Spring I planted what I thought was a combination of both green and purple; however, the Cannas are all up and they are all green again!! What is going on? When I gave some to my niece two years ago, she ended up with a combination of purple and green, but it's twice now that I have not.
