Century Plant seeds and what to do with them??

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Hi folks - just returned from a trip to NM and brought back some seeds from a ten foot tall century plant? Is this a hopeless endeavor to try to grow them from seed? Does anybody want any? Would be willing to share some for a SASE.

abarr, what kind you have seeds?

Are they seeds or the bulbils? The Century Plant is an agave and usually propagates by the bulbils it drops after flowering (and right before the plant dies).

I have a Century Plant in the g-house, somewhat small (probably needs some encouragement to get bigger). 'Twas a gift several yrs ago and was told it gets its name cuz it only bloomed every 100 yrs. Any truth to this? (Also noticed there is no info in the DataBase on Agave/Century Plant. Rather than entering info in there from a book I wish someone who has hands-on experience with them would post an entry.)

REDROSE, Dave - these are the seeds from pods that were the from flowers at the top of the plant. They're definitely not bulbils (like you'd find from Tiger Lilies and so forth). The pods were brown and 1-2" long, and when split, there were dozens of small flat seeds. The plant that it came from was about 7 ft. tall, and the bottom part of the plant appeared to be dead (was intact, but "crisp" and the leaves could be broken off).

I haven't tested the seeds for germination - was planning to put them in damp paper towels to see what would happen.
