Dragon fruit

Woodbridge, VA

Any idea if a well established and potted dragon fruit would survive the winter in northern Virginia once being planted in the ground

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Believe it is only tropical as Thailand is a major exporter of it and it grows wild down in Central America. I could be wrong though...

i have seen them growing in northern mexico were it does snow and frequently goes below freezing at night.

Let us know how it does- Easy to grow from seeds-I did it with seeds from a yummy dragon fruit from the grocery store. You might want to start one on the windowsill to replace yours if it dies.

That is how I grew mine as well. Just need to put it in a larger pot and probably cull over 50% of the plants.

Let us know if you have any luck. I have a feeling it will be a lot colder in Virginia than northern Mexico though.

8 years I have been growing them. they are finally at the right height and weight to fruit but i am afraid of the risk by putting them in the soil. even in my winter grow tent i doubt they will fruit. also, building a trellis in a pot is a bit difficult.

Except Woodbridge, VA is not zone 10 to 11. Probably zone 7 today - still pretty cold in winter.

Check this site out: (not sure if they would know how hardy the plants are but it looks like they may be in zone 9)

and a video on YouTube from the same grower (looks like they be in southern Louisiana)
