Plant Propagation The Basics ,October 2016
Hi folks I admire you guys that bring so many plants in . I gave up on doing too much of that now in my senior years, as I bring in my fig plant by taking it out of the pot and putting it in a clear garbage bag , put it on the basement and keep giving it a little water once in a while . I put the container of Caladiums in the basement .I will try again ith the Canna lilies ,but do not seem to have luck overwintering them. Every year I buy the root vegetable in the grocery store and have my Elephany Ears plants ,each root cost me about 39 cents . Lol I no longer take out my two Tropical hibiscus plants because they bloom well in the house .
,
They're all doing well Ju, I'm impressed with your bamboo too.
Thank you Robin , these began sprouting today
New England Pink Aster
As fa as I know my Red Garlic and Flat Topped Aster are up next , Sky Blue got planted today . Hoping for a flower bed full of Butterflies next year , Been cutting Stinging nettle back today , It grows back every ten days ,, I will have to cease planting in a few days , then wintersow becomes the equation

Ju, you're certainly a risk taker, I've been waiting to fall plant after a hard freeze because I don't want to fail and lose seedlings. I need all the help I can get. I purchased a few different types of Erigeron and hope to compare notes with you next Spring. My Winter sowing will start right after Christmas and then I'll start indoor sowing in March. Good luck to you and your efforts friend.
I cannot imagine winter planting as far north as you are.
Robin As for now . contrary to information (fall planting has never been recommended here ) , my experience is with this type of plant , (erigeron ) Aster ) is a plant 4 inches tall , upright types like aster , will mostly survive winter and bloom stronger than spring started ,..
Erigeron , Any with more than about 8 leaves , will return powerfully in spring ,.
The only one I am concerned about for now is the Smallspike nettle I have several small sprouts growing
Also several are in a jug , covered , on an Acrylic Glass garden Table , Those jugs stay warm , particularly when closed , and these plants will grow when it well below freezing , The only time those jugs usually freeze is in Feb ,, And they won't stay below freezing for long ,
Gypsi Sometimes if we don't winter grow , we don't grow anything , not so different from your area , and yet extremely different ,,
Robin What kind of Erigeron , I still have thousands of seeds of Azure Fairy and Miscanthus , Even traded and trading some I still have that many , Could send or have sent some with a Daylily I still have to get to you ,
Should I start some water seeds this fall
Beautiful lilies Debra. Are those still blooming now or pics from this summer?
Hi Keith.. seed pods are of these lillys, these are a few out front that bloomed late spring thru early summer. I have some things blooming that are not usually blooming right now, a kopper king hibiscus after I cut it back, burst out one more bloom, all the roses have at least one big bloom, the sunflowers, marigolds, datura and chinese bean are all still blooming. Hot, dry and windy feels like August.
Hope your babie plants get a good stronghold, Ju. What is this flower from? looks like yours a bit.
Has anyone heard from Jen? Jennnnnn.....
My firespike is a blooming like crazy outside and inside..
Debra that looks like a false aster or maybe a young sky blue aster .. there are so , so , many of them it is really difficult to tell what they are , I believe I see some blue lightly there ,
Firespike is nice ,
Jen is on the Back porch once in a while ,

that is the kind of wild aster I have all over the place down here, someone called it a thin aster I think?
Beautiful blooms Debra and Ju! Debra I really like what you planted with the Yellow Lily, that combination looks really good! Thanks to you, I've got some Firespike too, it's a neat plant I'm enjoying.
Ju I ordered Erigeron speciosus 'Blue Beauty' and Erigeron speciosus 'Pink Jewel'. I'd be happy to share for some Azure Fairy!
Seedlings are so cute, holding so much promise. I guess the same goes for babies everywhere in nature. I guess we should hold off on the trade until I actually have the seeds...just because they're on order doesn't mean I'll actually get them.
Robin No Worry , if I have something to share you know I will . I had a package of 10.000 Traded most have about 20 growing Planted some around to see if they would come up at random . (you know I do that , )lol
I have gotten several nice seeds from you to attempt Besides you Amuse me (my rambling ) as do several while I learn and am taught as it goes
If all goes well you will have them Saturday , and the Hyperion ,, Besides if mine goof ,(I doubt all will ) you might have my back , lol
and i forgot , as there hardy to zone 3 you could probably freeze that little plant above in a block of ice for 5 months and it would probably come out growing as it thawed

That fire spike is very nice Debra and Ju those ar a nice assortment of zinnias.
Thank you Keith We try to keep some flowers blooming as it is all done mostly farther north Really enjoyed all the displays you have and had shown this season , delightful
And all here , nice to see and hear ,,
Lol Ju...I have your back, I certainly do!
10,000 seeds? Wow, that's a lot of seeds! I only have 20 and 30 respectively. I've been looking for Asclepias purpurascens for some time now because I refused to pay $10.00 for 6 seeds on Ebay. Those are some rare and expensive seeds.
Keith, how's the reno going? I hope you haven't run into what I usually run into like finding unexpected problems that need to get fixed. Kitchen reno's are tough on a marriage, lot's of stress abound.
Thanks Ju. I love to share and glad it gives enjoyment.
Robin, the reno is going well. There definitely are some little hurdles and lots of stress but this old marriage can handle it. Floor prep is giving me the squeebie jeebies. Old vinyl was really tough stuff and was a real bugger to remove. Floor has a lot of unevenness that I have to get rid of with self levelling cement. Will be diving into that tomorrow. The main install was a week ago and WOW, what a change. Countertop was templated on Monday and it will be approx. 3 weeks until it is installed.
cytt, you said you keep your Hibiscus in the house all the time? I find that really interesting. Do you fertilize them with each watering? When do they bloom? I have a Rose of Sharon growing in the house now that I got from Debra. It looks so healthy, but don't know how to take care of it. Just water? fertilize? does it go dormant? Don't know anything about them.
Can you give me some info? Thanks, Jen
Hi Jnette ,I do not usually fertilize my Tropical Hibiscus unless I notice they are not striving well. My secret is to always keep a bottle of water on hand at room temperature and not water them with the shocking cold water direct from the tap. Roses of Sharon are treated as perinnials in your zone and mine , and I had it planted outdoors but was not too crazy about it because it re seeds so much.I never grew it as a house plant. If you like I can send you some cuttings whenever I prune my tropical one.
Awesome Tithonia Ju. Really vibrant orange.
I agree Keith, stunning Tithonia.
gorgeous color on that, Ju. Hay Robin, that Asclepias purpurascens ? I think I have some so don't buy any! While watching tv I am sorting seeds and making packets with names on them.. I will be sending out in time for you to do winter sowing play stuff.
Jen, you can water and feed that rose of sharon in front of a very sunny window and you might get blooms if they have warmth and sunlight. My Tithonia on the fence is still up, and some plants that started late are budded outside. No freeze yet and I think I had better get the rest of the brugmansias and the EE's in. I am working again tomorrow, it has been a long week! Can't wait to have SUnday off and play outside ..
Thanks Debra!!! I've got some Tecoma stans (Yellow Bells) if you're interested in that one.
Tomorrow I plan on planting a few , The season it is when some of them drop to the ground anyway , I will start them in place and cover and hope for the best ,
Suppose to be near 70
I will do some Hemerocallis this winter and later some Papaver ,
Getting seeds and watching little starts , last nights 36 did not bother these ,
Snapdragon
Camphor Basil
False nettle
Scabiosa (Knapweed
Gray Squirrel ..
very nice pics Ju. I am going to go bother my bees. I have some pics to upload but I have a hive in trouble if I don't get them ready for winter.
Time of year it is Gypsi , getting everything done ,, priority the live first
I took some pictures of weeds that just popped up on the boulevard of a very busy street in Toledo OH. Most didn't turn out very clear as the sun prevented me from seeing my phone screen. I ID all of them except this variety of Rudbeckia, the leaves are much smaller and softer than the ones (thugs) I'm eradicating from my garden.
Does anyone recognize this one?
Hi juhur7,do you start sunflower seeds now?or that was your winter sowing ?
cytf Some seeds fall natural this time of year , these are Early sunflower and Cup plant , (both Perennial and yes I am trying few now ,
They will sprout in cool weather and there is only one thirties in the Forecast (long range ) Those jugs are ten to twenty degrees warmer or even more when the sun shines on them
1 One an early sunflower sprout last week .
234 Two cup plants Fall blooming and another early sunflower (spring blooming The reason for this , leaving my worms alone , raising above stinging nettle and others for sunshine or light most of the time

Thanks Ju, I thought it might be Rudbeckia hirta.
it sure looks like my hirta, I have about 5 different kinds of rudbeckias. hirta has a wider leaf not as tall and the leaves are kind of downy. I had three darling little Girls over today to dig in the compost pile for grubs and worms ( for my rescue turtles) and paint some rocks.. so much fun! I wish I had some grand children, I love that my neighbors let me borrow their children from time to time.. last month they cut up a chi-chi and I had them plant some cut up pieces in cups, I forgot to ask them how they are progressing. Got an arch cleared out, this am.. that was about it for gardening , tho. it is too hot still to bring in this banana... and here are some cute lil girls not needing electronic devices to have some fun..
