Plant Propagation: The Basics September 2016

Oxdrift, Canada

Site seems really screwy tonight. It won't let me look at all of Debra's pictures. When I press next or previous it kicks me right back to the home page. After many times going in and out have managed to get a peak at all except the second one for whatever reason

Fort Worth, TX

I could view all of Debra's pics. I use Firefox

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

seems I must have slept too early tonight and now I am wide awake. *sigh* kind of worried about my gardens back home, I guess. lots of young things in very small containers that dry out pretty quick. Joe told his Mom that he will dig up part of his
* GASP* yard next year to expand the garden plot since we lost half of the old one with the new patio re-do. I am holding him to that statement for sure. I have a few wild flowers here in her yard I planted from a seed packet, but can't remember what this one is ( it is about 16" tall..) any ideas? I am hoping loosestrife.. the milkweed I planted is spreading and full of pods, I am happy about that. Moth Mullein I planted took off....I am working out there in the am, I guess I'll go force myself to go back upstairs to try to sleep in the No A/c hot room. :P

My water starts tend to fail, yours seem to work. Rainwater?

Oxdrift, Canada

Yes Gypsi, rainwater is definitely what gives me success with the coleus starts. I learned the hard way. One year for some crazy reason I used tap water from our well and had ZERO success. We have a water softener, a carbon filter and an ultraviolet light to treat our water so it has no nutrients. I even have to melt snow all winter to water them. Luckily the year that I used the tap water, the frost held off long enough that I got a second chance. We have a forecast of 5 C on Tuesday night which is almost guaranteed frost here unless it is cloudy and rainy so I probably won't have a second chance this year. Most of the succulents can take a bit of frost so I will probably gather up all those containers into a couple spots and cover those for a while yet because the way I do my succulent cuttings the whole plant is destroyed.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Keith your Coleus starts look a lot like an 'art installation'!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

wow , frost already for you? I hear we are flooded back in Derby, Ks, but still up here in Buffalo, NY and it is dry as all get out.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Waiting to see chicks! Cooler and thinking where I packed my sweatpants...Wis will be a good place to buy some if they have them on the shelves yet...

Cooler here also . Something keeps eating my fennels likely swt caterpillars ..Tithonia are perennial in the south . Here their a little difficult heat and all , still too cool here ..

Thanks for that kitty photo, if that's the one that's all grey...I want him/her. If only the caterpillars would wait until there's enough fennel to eat and still be able to grow. Fennel is obviously somebody's favorite.

Wisconsin does sound like a good place to buy sweatpants. When I was driving big trucks, I always loved going through the Dell's. What are the flowers in your last pic? One looks like Russian Sage.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes Robin that's all grey . your welcome also ... Bunch of Rascals ..
Sometimes you have to think pink anyway , . lol

I was going to say dragonsbeard, penstemon, but I better go put my research where my tongue is wagging..

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

The leaves from joint sprout twig . to mature leaves do not match anything . the bloom stalk leaves do match Penstemon or foxglove . The mature leaves look geranium or malva like ,
it is tough look Kitt

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Hmm, the flower resembles Digitalis and the mature leaves resemble Salvia. Are the leaves hairy or smooth?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Robin and all , Smaller leaves on the stalk are smooth , other leaves are a little hairy ,
and
It is !!!
A South African Foxglove

Gypsi, where are the chicks? And didn't you have some ducklings? We are back home finally, got all the fans out drying the basement.
Gardens are laid over from the 9 plus inches of water we got in 48 hours.
Our wally world has sweat pants out year round here..
I think I'm gonna try Keith's method of starting coleus.

Fort Worth, TX

Had to send a contract, Sunday Chick pics. and my new shed. Rats between the walls on the old one driving my dogs nuts, increasing rat trap purchases (got to the electric model) yeah, and hail storm paid for most of it. My helper put the home depot kit together, all metal. Now for electric fence on chicken coop
