My window box is south facing, so it gets all day sun. I planted a couple of vine clippings that I had received from friends, and they are doing fine. Since I am on a very tight budget, I try to find plants on sale. I found celosia plumes and put those in the back hoping they would get taller and add some interest. I was mistaken. I cut them all back and now my window box has just a few vines hanging in front. Can someone suggest flowers for this area? It is August 1st and I know they will be short lived, but I would love to see some color in the box. Also, any ideas for winter planting? I was thinking pine boughs and the sort. Thank you in advance for any help.
Window Box Fail
Window boxes I have not much luck with - too hot in Houston area, the roots overheat. Million Bells, Shasta daisies? Or other asters are tough, too. Have seen cosmos, petunia, begonia, Blue Daze,
Why did you cut the Celosia back? They will re-bloom. You just have to wait a little bit.
Petunias work well and have been on sale.
Pansies work well for fall.
Pine boughs for winter is probably a good idea. Also, you can get some "fake" Christmas stuff to put in your boxes.
Or, you can get some "seed heads" that would possibly last through the winter.
You can also spray them gold or silver or whatever.
Have you considered planting succulents in the window box? There are many different leaf colors, plant sizes, and trailing ones as well. Place small stones on the surface to add interest, and to retain moisture if it is extremely dry.
