We recently had a queen palm removed due to disease. The stump was not ground down. What remains is about 2" stump. We would like to build a deck on top of where the stump is, but are not sure if the stump will interfere with the deck supports. How difficult would it be to remove what is left? It's approximately 20" in diameter. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!
Julie
Stump/root removal
Julie,
In my brief experience with sago palms, I've learned that the roots don't go very deep at all (as the crow flies). However, if there's any viable life in them, you'll end up with palm puppies growing under your deck. Not sure if they'd buckle the supports in any way, but, better safe than sorry.
At the minimum, if you don't want to dig up the entire circumference of the stump to remove it entirely, I'd get a good stout chainsaw, and score cuts in the stump, like a checkerboard. Then, pour some stump killer into the cuts. That should adequately kill what remains. Although, you may need to consider that, once that stump dies, the hole may begin to sink in. Your deck supports might go with it....
Hope this helps.
Linda
