Hello,
Great forum! Thank you for contributing and expanding our knowledge.
My partner and I are in the Houston, TX area, in zone 9a. We recently purchased some acreage and want to grow a variety of trees and plants.
Does anyone have suggestions on some low to medium maintenance trees and plants we can plant in the spring/summer?
My partner (female) loves trees that are colorful and aesthetic.
We would also like to attract some birds if possible.
Thank you so much!

Zone 9a suggestions
You can check with your county extension agent. They should be able to give you an idea of some good foundation plants.
I don't know if your soil is acid or alkaline, but I think that either was a Cercis (redbud) would be nice. I had a couple of beautiful pecan trees in the Dallas area, too.
Hello,
Thank you for your reply. My soil is acidic, with a Ph ranging from 4-5 depending on where I test it.
I know there are plenty of vendors listed on here, but does anyone have suggestions for an online vendor where to buy trees?
Thank you so much,
Oxonian
Wow, a pH of 4-5? More acid than a bog? I find that quite amazing.
Just wondering about that. It seems somewhat at odds with this summary of Texas soils which describes the Houston area as Coast Prairie Soils that are "slightly acid" in uplands and alkaline in some parts.

Does it make sense to the Texans in this group?
Hi,
I took the sample from various locations on my property, which is spread over several acres. In a way that was a mistake, I should have taken independent samples the areas which are significantly different, and probably, I would not have received such as low PH.
However, I believe, a cause for the low PH is the abundance of Pine trees in the area, which have been dropping cones, and have been growing wild, for at least 10+ years.
I have the entire soil analysis report, should I post it here?
Thank you so much,
Oxonian
