I noticed these last year but have gotten a couple more and big. What are they? Just showing on the one trunk. Also, this is the only trunk that looks shaggy like an old lilac. My cat, who is declawed, paws at this one.

Those swollen points are normal growth of bark around the sites where branches used to be.
What species of Lilac is that? Show us the whole thing, if you can.
I have forgotten long ago, which type it is, even species. But most likely S. vulgaris. Why not have the old branch site be like fruit trees when they are pruned? The pictures will come later.

You are right ViburnumValley. I took a close look at the nubs and saw very small branch remains.
Show us images when you can. I bet they can be spectacular in flower.
