Splayed cauliflower

Sugar Land, TX

Hello everyone,

I took a first shot at growing winter vegetables this season. I started with what I believed was the easiest of them all - cauliflowers and cabbages. Well, appears I need a tip or two ...

The cauliflower florets have growth splayed. These are not compact like what one would expect. Is this because of limited watering? The growth also is somewhat slower than what I had expected. Am I being impatient?

The cabbages have leaved profusely but are yet to form a head. Again, is this just a matter of time?

Thanks for your input.

The practice I recall for growing cauliflower and promoting the formation of tight heads was to gather the outer leaves together over the forming flower heads and to tie them shut.

The only time I gathered the leaves from cauliflower was to keep the heads white. Ive never had a problem with the heads being splayed but I think it may be an indication of temps being too high. We haven't really had a winter yet.

The cauliflower should still be edible.

Hello All

Thank you so much for your response.

I harvested the head as it was. It tasted quite nice actually.

Does the cauliflower give further florets, like a broccoli once harvested? Or is this it for my plant?

Many thanks again
