CLOSED: 2015 FALL SEED ROBIN IN FLIGHT

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

I planted mine right where i wanted them to grow so that they will get the sun & cold & rain they need, Back in 2000-02 I had Joined a winter sowing Group & tried the Milk Jug they flooded the seeds out yes i had drain holes in them , & some Grew Mold , critters Knocked them over , so from then on I just plant the seeds right into the ground where i need for them to grow till they can be Moved around .

Kelley all we can do is tell you what has worked & what has not worked for us but it is all Just what you have the time for & what might work for you .

The tins work well if they are in out of the weather where their covers cannot blow off :) & They have good drainage .

if your weather is still nice where you can spade up a some area & just scatter a few seeds here & There that may work best for some seeds . like Columbines , & Poppies ,

Again what ever you can do with what you have Just save a few seeds to plant in the spring in case some of your winter sowing dose not come up . you can put them in the frig till spring then plant outside :)
hope some of this helps you .

Greensburg, PA

I have brand new beds into which I will be planting these plants next spring. The reason I cannot winter sow directly this year is because I've amended the soil with peat and mushroom compost....actually, my ground is all clay, so this is why I must amend aggressively.Seeds simply will not germinate in mushroom compost, thus, I must use plants this first spring, as I don't want to take a chance in losing all of these seeds. You can be sure in the future I will direct sow, I just cannot this year.

I appreciate all of the advice! :-) I will be splitting the seeds, chilling some and winter sowing some. I think I am going to put them in containers in the cold frame. I won't mind going out there and adding snow to them each time it snows outside. :-)

Is the best way to store in the fridge or just in a drawer somewhere?

Ocean Springs, MS

I need to clean all my beds! Afraid to wintersow because of all the weeds that come up in Spring. My beds are a mess because I wasn't able to do much in the past two years because of the fibromyalgia. Need to just start over!

Mama, you sound very excited about going through the seeds! Yay!

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

I am as ready as I am going to be. When the box comes, most likely I will be out at one of my jobs. Here's hoping I will have a stretch of time to go through the box in a somewhat enjoyable fashion. I will have more time on Saturday to really do it right. I hope I have that long? depending on when the box gets to me.

Talk about heirloom seeds!

You know I save my seeds in a little refrigerator in "my" room. But it's probably not necessary, especially since I'm in zone 8b/9a and none of the plants I grow need cold. I think a drawer is just fine. What's more important is to do the research on your seeds to decide the best way to germinate each one. I sort mine in Fall as to how I'm going to germinate them. On the heat mat, in the unheated greenhouse or out in the garden in place. And then when is important too, Fall/Winter or Spring. I'm a seed-a-holic for sure, I already have 4 flats on the heat mat, 8 in the greenhouse, and I've sown poppies and hollyhocks all over the place. Good news is I've decided to do some plant sales next fall, that means I can grow more than I need so I have enough to sell, LOL.

This is going to seem like a really odd request, but I am wondering if anyone on here lives in a region of the country where dandelion seeds can still be harvested. Why? Well, our family is going to be participating in a gag gift exchange next weekend and I'd LOVE to give seeds!! Dandelion seeds, that is! Can anyone help me with this?? Just pop a few ripe heads in a baggie and then into an envelope and post it to me? It would be great! Anyone?

Kelley

Natick, MA

Kelley,
The dandelion seeds are the "puffs" that form after the flowers,(that as a kid you pick and blow everywhere..that is why they are so prolific!) so you have to get them at the right time. I'm guessing that people even in the south are not seeing those now? I could be wrong tho! Great gag gift idea, tho! You might have to wait til next year to implement that one :o)

Greensburg, PA

Thanks, Val. I did see packets are available online to purchase for a few dollars. I just may do that! -Kel

Natick, MA

Really? They sell them on onine??

I added Australian Blue or Blue Doll Pumpkin seeds to the robin when I had it. You may not be familiar with it, but it is very pretty. It is a cooking pumpkin.

The pumpkin has a blue/green color that looks like stone, the inside is bright orange and smells like a melon. It is very sweet when cooked.

No dandelions here this time of year! But when they are, my kids and my grandkids (and me-LOL) love making wishes on them!

That pumpkin looks delicious! ☺

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

The Robin arrived on my doorstep this morning! But I had a lot of work to do for the Christmas party coming up at work in a few days, so my reward for working so hard today is to slowly open the Robin tomorrow after church and relish the contents! Thanks so much!

Natick, MA

Timmijo, SOOO glad it got to you during the weekend. ENJOY tomorrow!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

OH happy you got him please take time to enjoy him today :) & Lavina is Next on the list & Excitely waiting :)

Timmyjo Just dmail me the tracking # when you mail . hope everyone
is haven a great weekend .

brainerd, MN(Zone 4a)

Obliqua- I for one will grab a few of those! Super excited!
Timmyjo - can you put 5 seeds in a little baggie for me so I dont miss out on those? Please? :)

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

same here if there is plenty to do so :) 5-6 will be good for me also :)

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

I have a question: When I got to Val's baggie, some of the various seed packets inside the larger baggie are marked "trade". May I take any seeds from those, or are they targeted to a specific recipient? Or is that a way to catalog your seeds as you harvest them .... help :-)

PS~ So far, I can tell which baggies are clearly meant for someone else, and I bypassed those...

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

Obliqua has some very interesting seeds in the box. Are those delicious pumpkins difficult to grow?

I usually give up on planting any vining crop and just buy pumpkins in the fall. Around here, there are squash bugs and/or viruses that tend to devastate any ground vine crop for the home gardener by mid or late summer.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

timmy the ones in vals for trade yes you can take from them .

if anyone has seeds for another player we put their seeds in an envelope & put to & from on the outside & they go in
the big baggy with all the addresses, & screens I sent to be used for cleaning some seeds a little easier .

hope your enjoying the robin :)

Natick, MA

Timmijo,

EVERYthing in my bag is for someone to swap for other seeds -- the only things that are set aside for someone else is in an envelope marked with their name. Sorry to be confusing, but they are only marked "Trade" on the label so people will know I got them in trade...they are not from my own garden. Sometimes people mark them commercial (for purchased seeds), trade or "G" (own garden). I didnt mark all the others. You are welcome to take them. I seperated my seed donations into individual seed bags. Some participants prefer to just put their seeds in one bag and people can take some.

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

Okay, got it. I will put those pumpkin seeds in envelopes and mark them accordingly. And I will probably end up placing some of my seeds in a big baggie for others to spoon out.

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

The pumpkin seeds are molding. I took them all out and spread them on paper to dry for a day; maybe that will help them.

Here in Delaware, we live with humidity on a constant basis; there is no escaping it in any season. Until I began to trade seeds, I had never used plastic to store seeds in because paper envelopes afford a level of air circulation that is necessary for storing seeds in my region.

Not being critical, just sharing my experiences. Since I do have plenty of my seeds already packaged in paper, may I include some of those in the box?

Any advice on the pumpkin seeds?

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

timmy as for paper as long as they are not the hand made with Paste , tape or staples .

you can use self seal paper coin envelopes if you have them ,
