We got a brushing of snow last night too. The temperatures have been so warm it melted instantly. Sorry to hear about the butterfly bush seeds.

Greensburg, PA

Susie, there were two bags of your butterfly bush seeds and only one had what looked like white mold on them, so I wasn't sure if they were supposed to look like that or not. You packed two different types, right? -Kelley

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

yes i did kelly & thank you for letting me know & I passed it on to val to take care of them .

News says possible 4-7 " by tonight . sure not going to leave the House .
I got stocked up yesterday :) my Niece just called to say she wanted some of my Check party mix & bought all the chex on sale yesterday & going to bring it all over for me to make it up for our TG Day together.
Her kids just cannot get enough of it so when she finds everything on sale she grabs a few boxes & brings to me to make it :) course I get to keep some for myself for making :)

well guess I need to get moving she will be here soon :)

MINNIE :) HOPE YOU HAVE A SPECIAL DAY PLANNED
HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Ocean Springs, MS

Happy birthday, Minnie!

Susie, we are actually wanting some snow here. Been 11 years since we got any that accumulated. Had a couple of short flurries since then but not even enough to really twirl around in! I'd love to have some Chex mix please! I make two large foil roasting pans full for Christmas. The kids are into before I even get it out of the pans! I pack it up in gallon bags and give it to my older kids and other family members. Each of the teenagers get a bag, too! I even make a special little batch for my ex because he only likes the rice and corn chex with peanuts. He does a lot for me throughout the year, like doing a tune-up on my car, bringing the lawn mower over so the boys can cut grass, etc. I'm just thankful we are on good terms. Makes things so much easier for the kids!

Ok, getting ready to do some Christmas projects. Have a great day and stay warm! ♥

Greensburg, PA

Snow here today! Just planted two trees yesterday, an American Dogwood and an old fashioned weeping willow. I've always wanted a weeping willow and we have a spot near the rear of our property that often gets wet and boggy, so a perfect place for such a beautiful tree!. So, we got our trees in and mulched just in time! :-) -Kelley

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I'm happy for you Kelley, both are wonderful trees. Furthermore, you've got a fist full of seeds to play with. Life is good!

Ocean Springs, MS

I have planted many dogwoods in my time and have never had one live! Someone tell me, what's the secret?

33 here this morning. Going to the dentist in just a few minutes, then a stop by Walmart.

Y'all stay warm!

Natick, MA

ROBIN RECEIVED...10 mins before I left for work, I saw the USPS truck at the end of my driveway.Went out and he had the robin, so it has arrived safely. Will let you all know when it's going out (I'm anticipating Wed as I'm at work today).

Kelley,I have always admired dogwoods and bought a couple small trees and am watching them grow with anticipation. We dont have much room for more trees, as much of our lot is circled with Oaks. Willows are so beautiful...grew up next to a house that had two of them and always admired them. They are such lovely trees!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Going through my seeds...have 306 variety and im only 2/3 way through the alphabet...lol
Was busy yesterday baking. 4 pumpkin pies from scratch, pumpkin cheesecake, banana cake, strawberry rhubarb bread, then venison and mashed potatoes for dinner. Couldnt walk when I was done. My back was pissed off!
Oh well.

Natick, MA

Yum Minne! Sounds delicious! Happy Belated BD! Hope you get to rest up a bit after all that work!

Nanny, that's quite a change in temps!

Greensburg, PA

I see the robin box was delivered to Val's door around 8 this morning. I believe she worked all day and it was in the upper 30s to low 40s today. Will that hurt some of those seeds?

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

kelly she was home when the robin landed she sent me a note to let me know it was there so not to worry .

Wow Min Pumpkin cheese cake sounds YUM might have to get the recipe :)
My back is also aching tonight so sitting back watching the news so much Killings , really sad .

3 days and 480 seed "packets". Some same flower, different color, etc...but 480 different packets. I think I have a problem. :) I cannot vouch for all of their viability, some are from 2008 but dang it if I'm not going to try next season!

I haven't even gotten to my veggie seeds yet.

I will go through the wants list of folks and take a peek to see if I have what you are looking for. I will contact you via D-Mail if I come across something. Because it may be that I have them from 2008 - which is why I will contact you privately to see if you want to give 'em a try. It would mostly apply to those who are in the 2nd go-round as I am at the end and would like to be able to put them in the box with your name on them.

Pumpkin Cheesecake - I got it off the Betty Crocker website. Its delish!

Natick, MA

Ok group, here's the scoop: I stayed up late last night (I was up at 5am) going thru the robin and had all my seeds to add ready, so it's packed and ready to mail to Alikat/Candi and will go out in today's mail. Priority mail to Alikat is ONE day, so Candi keep your eyes open...It's a Thanksgiving "present" :)

Note: one of the participants put a packet of Totally Tangerine Geum (from a trade) in the robin. Please note: these seeds are sterile. I know because i bought the plant last summer and was excited to save the seeds..and when I was reading about the plant, found out they are sterile. Just so you all are aware

Minne...Holy cow, you are a gal after my own heart! LOL! We can start "Seed Addicts Anonymous" just to have to have a place to talk about seeds/growing/plants! Oh, wait, that's DG!

Kelley, you did a great job packing the robin. That box is pretty fully!
Dont worry...my husband was home yesterday. If I didnt get the robin before work, he'd have brought it in.

Have a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING everyone!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Wow that Robin is really flying fast! It will be back to Susie before we know it. I still have seeds to go through, too. I guess I'd better hustle!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes I Just Noticed 5 STOPS in Just 18 days . we will have to rename it to WHEN THE PIG FLIES :) hehe

Greensburg, PA

I'm going to be swapping with locals, too! One of the reasons I snagged a tiny bit of seeds from all that were there, with the exception of those seeds specifically meant for others.

5 am, Val! You sure were having fun! -Kel

Natick, MA

Seeds are ALWAYS fun -- LOL!

Ocean Springs, MS

Yep, this robin is flying fast. He's getting ready for the trip South! LOL

(Marta) Frederick, MD

I can't wait.

I will be out of town for Thanksgiving, but will be back by Sunday morning. I figure if Candi gets it tomorrow and takes a day to look thru. Maybe don't mail it till Saturday, so we are home to get it (we have someone feeding our cat while we are gone who could bring it in if needed).

I am so excited!
Marta

brainerd, MN(Zone 4a)

I ran through everyone's wish lists (if you had one) and pulled seeds I had if they matched.
Please let me know if you will be in "round 2" so I can put them in the box (I am the last one before it goes back to Susie).
I found the following:

StillPlaysWithDirt: Magnolia Grandiflora, Amaranthus tricolor 'Perfecto'
Tuckersmom: Sweet Alyssum 'Pastel Carpet','Royal Carpet','Carpet of Snow', Beebalm purple, 'Zabrina' Mallow, 'Husker's Red' Penstemon
Pistil: Globe Thistle
AliKat32: 'Husker's Red' Penstemon, Maltese Cross, Crocosmia 'Lucifer'

If you are interested in these, please let me know. If not, I will just put them back in my seed stash :)

227mama: I have your 4 O'Clocks bagged and ready also
(Val & Susie, yours are ready to go as well)

Now I have to figure out what Im putting in for trades :)

Lake Stevens, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi minnesippi-
I can't figure out who it was that wanted the globe thistle, but it wasn't me! I have two, and that is plenty. I just scrolled through the Have/Want thread, wow people have been updating those lists since I last looked. This box is going to be like an entire seed store!
Nevertheless, I spent an enjoyable hour on the Plant World Seeds website the other day...
p.s I want to grow Peony 'Molly the Witch' (Paeonia mlokosewitschii) from seed, does anyone have any seeds of this? It costs $5.55 for 8 seeds. That is not the problem, the problem is that if I order from them, to make it worth the shipping, I might order some of the other 30 things I tagged.

Natick, MA

Minne- Thanks again. I am in the second round of the robin.

Pistil- Ok, now you did it. I never heard of Plant World seeds, so now i'm going to have to go check it out and be enticed :o) I laughed at your comment that you'd have to order more to make it worthwhile....SO True, but I feel for your dilemma!

Ocean Springs, MS

Good morning, girls! Oh no, I can't do any more buying right now! Have to start saving to have a root canal and crown done! No insurance, no financing...so If I save half, they'll fit me for the crown and go from there.

Looking forward to seeing the robin fly. I love reading everyone's posts about going through it! ☺

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

ya all have a great day back later

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

Hello, everyone. I am so excited to be participating in the Robin, thanks to the helpfulness of everyone and the generosity of a special lady in the forum. I hope to return the favor someday soon.

Just a note to say that I have not created a haves nor a wants list, but a boxful of seeds from around the country is like opening a Christmas present when you have no idea what is inside. That is what makes it fun for me. I'm sure it will all be fantastic. (Someday I will update my haves and wants).

I do have a question. Maybe it had already been mentioned, but here goes:

After I get the Robin, do I close up the box and re-send in the same box, or do I purchase another box just like it and affix the postage to the new box?

Sincerely,

Timmy Jo

Timmy if the box is in good shape No damage to it then use the same box if you see that the bottom or top is pretty ragged then Please replace the box not sure if it is in the same box i used or not no one has mentioned ,
maybe val can tell us what type box is being used & the cost ?
that might help you some to plan :)

Natick, MA

I got the Robin in a Regional B Box, which is the mid size regional box. Generally, if you're sending relatively close, the regional box is the way to go (they dont really go by weight, but by size, and if you're sending, say from Mass. to NH, as I did, the cost was under $7 vs. 12.95 for the flat rate medium box). I think Obliqua used the Regional Box, and it was in good shape. I was able to just tear off the To/postage labels, slap mine on, tape it up and send it off. Unless the box gets wet or something, I suspect it'll be fine to re use. You just might have to get/buy some of the packing tape and make sure it's well taped up, which is always a must anyway.

The other thing I did was print out my label and pay the postage on usps.com (you can pay with your paypal account or with a credit card), then you 1. get the lower "on line price" for postage and 2. dont have to wait in line ..you just drop it off at the PO and you have your tracking number on line and on the label already.

Please note: that robin is pretty full as it is now. At some point, someone's going to have to move up a box size. Hopefully someone has a Regional C Box? BE SURE when you are closing up the ziploc bags that you sqeeze out all the air out of the ziplocs so you can fit as much in the box as possible :o)

Be sure to compare prices on line (usps.com - calculate a price)

For instance, Timmy Jo...your are shipping to NC, so I picked up Raleigh NC's zip code to get an approx. cost. The on line price for a Regional B box is $7.25 for you to ship the box out, and probably a dollar or so more if you dont do it on line.

Tuckersmom ships from Wichita KS to Arroyo Grande, CA. so it's cheaper for her to pay for the med. flat rate box vs. the "B" box to Calif (longer distance) which would be $13.37 on line

Hope this helps.

Val
