CLOSED: 2015 FALL SEED ROBIN IN FLIGHT
Hi DeeJay9, Susie!, I'd love some of the Roguchi clematis seeds. Can I look for them in round 2?
And Minnesippi, if you have enough, I'd love to try the Magnolia Grandiflora, and I am in round 2.
:-) -Kelley
The box information is helpful. I seem to remember from a spring Robin last year that I showed up at the Post Office (after I was done trading seeds) with the original box that started the trade. It was a Regional Box B. The Post Office was surprised to see me with it, as if I as an individual was not allowed to have such a box. I am not even sure if I can get Regional Boxes by walking into the P.O. But I will try to ship it in the safest, most secure, most affordable fashion. Thanks again.
No, you have to order the regional boxes on line. They don't have them and they sure don't advertise them!
that reg C Box is huge & I don't think that will work it will leave to much room in the box & The seeds baggies will be flying around in there . just try to pack as tight as you can .
Kelley, I will pop a few in the box for you :) Being I am in MN, I highly doubt they will grow here. The magnolia seeds are from 2008 so I cannot guarantee germination. I also read it takes a LONG time for them to germ anyway. It was a tree I had in my front yard in MS when I lived there.
I love magnolias, but have to go with a hardier one way up here. Time to hit ArborDay.com again :)
USPS.com also offers you the option to use your own box if it's under a certain weight. I can ship a 2 pound box no matter the dimensions for about $7-$8. It's all a matter of doing what you can to save on postage.
Good point, Julie.
I weighed the box and it was a little under 4lbs.when it left here

Happy Thanksgiving to all! Spent the day with my 3 teenagers and they kept me laughing just about all day. We went to see the movie "A Good Dinosaur" and later went to Denny's for dinner. They loved having Mom all to themselves! And I loved just being with them! ♥
Susie, sorry you have to wait to eat or drink. I know it's hard!
Glad to see the Robin flying again! ☺
Morning Everyone!
Update on the robin....I've put everything into a new regional rate B box - the original box was looking a bit tired and bent.....it's getting pretty tight in the box....I pressed the air out of all the baggies so it should arrive to 22Mama well pressed! I was intrigued by the purple and white seeds...had to take a few just to try them! Now I can't wait until spring....and the second round of the robin to see what everyone after me has put in!
After careful inspection of my seeds....I had to remove some of the ones that just didn't dry out....I'll modify my list - but there won't be any turtle heads or penetstemon this year... I did decide to do individual packets to make it easier for everyone...so you can just take a whole packet from my baggie -- I've put 3 or 4 of every kind I had in there.
I'm taking the robin to the post office after workout classes ....should be there around noon! And in MD by Monday!
O my, reading these posts makes me so anxious for round 2!!!!
Today is our Thanksgiving celebration. I'm hosting, but having three teenage daughters and two teenage sons makes to work load light for everyone! I still have to make mashed potatoes and stuffed artichokes, but everything else is finished.
Enjoy your holiday weekend, garden friends!

Glad to hear everyone else had a pretty good weekend too.

We had our family Thanksgiving celebration yesterday! It was a blessing to have 4 of my children and 4 of my grandchildren, plus Moma, my SIL, DIL, and my youngest daughter's boyfriend here! Colt called and I was so excited to talk to him! I had a very thankful and blessed dinner and visit with all of them!
I'm working on my seeds today. Susie, I have yours marked.
Stillplayswdirt- got the lotus seeds put aside for you!
If you dmailed me or posted that you wanted something from my list, please remind me!

So glad to hear that everyone has had super great Thanksgivings! I love taking a moment to think about what I'm so grateful for! There are so many blessings to count....and all my DG friends are part of them....you all make gardening and life so much fun! I love getting excited about seeds, and blooms, and chores.....I love sharing in your lives and sharing mine with you all! Today I'm working on my bloom guide - adding all the dates into the 2015 column so I can track when everything blooms - and catching up on my scrapbooking so I can share my album with family at our Christmas holiday party....I'm only up to August so a few more months to go before I'm caught up for the year! Have a super great day everyone! Some visitors below....they live here year round....this was from the spring but just a few moments ago about 50 walked thru the yard and gardens looking for food!
What a nice surprise to see! The only things I see around my house are opossums, raccoons, and armadillos! The opossums and raccoons actually come up on the porch to eat the cat food!

Marta, hope you didn't stay up all night! LOL
I've finished cataloging the seeds I'd received from this seed robin into two groups, seeds that can wait until spring and seeds that must be planted now. I'm excited about the next step of winter sowing. :-) I've never done this before. I've received seeds from DeeJay9, Katgroves, Obliqua, DomehomeDee, Valal, and a few others from a 2014 seed robin, I presume. I can't tell you have appreciative I am for having such a wonderful variety of seeds.Thank you, Susie, for organizing this Robin and for everyone who has so generously participated! :-)
As I move forward with winter sowing, I am sure I will have questions, as I've already one. When I read about "cold frames" I am wondering if what I have qualifies. We have a screened in patio with an attached roof and hubby built screened walls. In the winter, we wrap it with plastic to cut down on the weather coming in onto our wicker furniture, etc. Since it's wrapped in plastic and not heated, can this double as a cold frame? Only one portion is not winterized with plastic, and that is the little hole at the floor that our dog uses to go in and out. It is about a 10 inch by 12 inch opening with just a screen door on it. Would that be too much of an unprotected opening? My thought is not, but I wanted to check with experienced winter sowers.
Thank you for everything!
-Kelley
Kelly sounds as you have a Perfect place to Put up a Table & set out your new seeds I go to the $$ store & get the alumium foil pans with Lids write the name of the seeds on Masking tape stick to the side of the pan , Punch a few Holes in Bottom of the pan , fill with seed starter Moisten the soil , add the seeds then cover & leave for a few weeks I do recheck the soil to insure the soil is Moist . you might also want to put a palastic table cloth & Newspapers to soak up any draining . or drip pans under them .
can sunlight get into the plastic ? some seeds need sun light .
I planted many of mine right out side where i want them to grow I used Plant tags to mark where i planted them & Now My fingers crossed they will grow :) will let you know in the spring time :)
Kelley,
We have a similar screened porch but no longer enclose in plastic as my hubby gets older, we've just let it go "natural". I'm not sure why you want to plant your wintersown containers in the porch area vs. outside. Outside, your pots will get buried in snow, which when it melts will water your seeds naturally, as well as rain in the spring time.
So my input would be that you dont need a "cold frame" type setting for wintersowing. However, I've never used one so might be missing the advantages. I started a wintersowing thread, but now we're going into 2015-2016 season, i think I'll start a new one. PLEASE feel free to come on over and ask ANY questions you might have.
it's really simple, and yes, you can overthink it, but I DO understand you want to make sure you have the steps right and so you are successful :)
Like Susie, alot of my containers are dollar store roaster (tin) pans with clear tops that I bought at the dollar store. I found that those really were so much easier to deal with and fit more seeds and liked them better than the milk jugs which were harder to prop open in springtime. I plan to use more; We have a deck off our screened porch, and this is where I put all my WS containers last winter
Here's the new thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1410412/
WHAT FUN!!! ...my husband thinks I'm crazy and keeps asking where I am putting all these plants.
I was only up till 11 with the (very full) box ...and back at it for another 2 hrs today. Very glad I was off today ;) ...don't worry I did not take off just to play with seeds.
TIMMJO you ready? I can send it your way tomorrow.
Thank you all for your generosity. I already can't wait for the second time.
Marta
KelleyBee-
I agree with valal about the wintersowing- outside is good, the things we wintersow generally like a cold winter, so why warm them up, and the watering is automatic if you leave the cap off the milkjug so rain and snow get in.
However, the porch sounds just perfect for early seed starting of you spring seeds, the ones that like warmth!
Also-about the second go-round in the Robin, you are fairly early in the Robin, so a second go-round for you would get you a look at a lot more seeds, and for the second flight you don't have to put more seeds in.
This is so much fun.
Thanks Pistil, I will consider your advice on both counts. :-) -Kel
