Haha...9 trips!
I do love my larix! A very dependable tree for sure. It grows like a weed. This bugger was only a 2' tall stick in 2010. It always puts on a good fall show.
fall
Wee needs to do a "how-to" youtube video to document this process...
you mean a 'how-not-to' video ...
Fall color is still hanging around, with my JM's particularly showing off.
I walked around the yard this afternoon and the colors seemed particularly nice.
But I was disappointed to see I couldn't focus to save my soul.
But I thought they were pretty enough to post, blurry or not.
#1 Seiryu - upright dissectum - each leaf is a pinwheel of color.
#2 A japonicum, not sure which cultivar. A colorful beacon at the top of my drive.
#3 Koto Ito Komachi. Another upright dissectum - thread-like leaves are bright red.
#4 Kinran with Koto Ito Komachi in the background and some evergreen foil.
#5 Utsu Semi - would be a nice picture if I could have gotten it focused. I had about 6 out-of-focus pictures to choose from!
Got to love the late foliage colors. Very nice! Most of our stuff is down. The dawn redwood in the front yard is bronzing nicely and the sweetgum in the back yard still has it's green and golds.
Here are a scarlet letter or two from the Valley and environs...
**The Klehm Group Arrowwood Viburnums, including Crimson Tide, Red Regal, and Indian Summer
**A leaf left on Franklinia alatamaha
**The underappreciated Eastern Wahoo - Euonymus atropurpureus
**Acer rubrum 'Brandywine'
**And one that hasn't been out of the box - Acer truncatum 'XPL Red Leaf' out of the Center for Hardy Plants research project
yes, indeed
Very nice VV! My arrowoods haven't changed color yet. I'm not sure if I'll get a taste of their true colors this year though since they are first year plantings. We'll see. I bought some very nice foliage ones though. Do you have a zoomed out pic of your eastern wahoo? I really like those, they are very pretty.
weerobin those acer look great. this was a disappointing year for acer color here with only a few showing off. must have been the dry conditions we are down 8".
Bummer, Wha ... I was expecting to see you post some of your guys, since they've looked awfully spectacular every fall ! I always look forward to seeing your JM's.
You guys up there have had a rough summer with drought. I've done my share of complaining but we're not close to as bad.
Bummer is right I look forward to those every year.
Yeah I hear you. Our reds were a little sedated for some but my A. rubrum crushed it. A lot of the variable colored trees like our Katsura and Sweetgum were just yellow although the latter is trying to pop some red.
I still remember that magnificent Katsura VV posted a while back, man what a beautiful tree. I would have loved to smell the crushed leaves.
Yeah Wha we all suffer for that one, maybe their storing up energy to knock our socks off next year. That's probably it.
I planted a Katsura this past June. It did a Maackia amurensis on me this fall. Yikes!
My katsura doesn't color great for me either... Tends to look more crispy than colorful. Disappointing.
Sounds to me like you two should swap trees. Unless, Pseudo's Katsura is still adapting to it's new enviro. Wee, I think yours just had too much drought.
Perhaps VV could weigh in, but in my limited non-professional experience, that's more than likely it. I do have the capacity to help you out though...I'll cross my fingers.
I planted a Katsura this past June. It did a Maackia amurensis on me this fall. Yikes!
What do you mean by doing a Maackia amurensis on you this fall?
Katsura take a very long time to establish IMO. Ours was planted fall of '12; it was my wife's wedding gift to me. It had a very rough spot of damage on both sides of the trunk and has been working at closing them since. The smaller is almost fully closed but the larger still has a season or two left to go. It has only grown about a foot in that time. It was also very pot bound so it took some extra time to root into the surrounding soil after root surgery. They also like water during dry spells or their leaf edges can become crispy. Fall color hasn't really been that great yet though. A plain yellow is all mine does so far.
Maackia amurensis is a nice tree, but fall color is not one of its strengths. I posted a couple pictures on this thread back on October 31, that shows how poor the fall color is. It's a nice tree yet, but M. a. has a well deserved reputation for poor fall color.

Very vibrant VV, I really like the Architecture behind that grand Ginkgophyta too.
That's downtown Lexington's skyscrapers!
These are immediately adjacent to the Lexington Farmers Market on Cheapside, where Viburnum Valley Farm Confections has a booth every Saturday morning. The buildings are the former Fayette County Courthouse and the former First National Bank Building (tallest building in Lexington when built, at 15 stories). The courthouse has been vacant for a few years since the new courthouse(s) were built a block away, but is under renovation and we await its rebirth. The old bank building has been under renovation for a couple years, and will reopen as the newest 21C Hotel.
We can't wait - especially to get street circulation back open again. Here are some images from today, and one showing those buildings in summer 2010.
Lol, thanks! Do you run to and from work to keep the weight off? Man those look scrumptious.
Photo #3 is a beauty queen if I've ever seen one, is she trying to catch some Z's between competitions while keeping an ear out for her cue?
Pseudo, I saw that Maackia foliage and thought to myself, is he crazy about thinking it's foliage was handsome? Maybe you were being sarcastic and I didn't notice. You're right though, not very good looking. Even a Katsura on a bad day looks much better than that.
Whoa VV! What is that plant in your 3rd picture set? Is that the Euonymous atropurpureus? Nice Ilex 'Winter Gold'. I just bought one this season. I couldn't resist, it was only 10 bucks. The golden color of the berries is much nicer on that than my V. dilatatum 'Michael Dodge'. I think Gingkos have one of the best fall yellows out there. So stunning.
Since we haven't had a hard freeze yet, I still have some intrepid warriors strutting their stuff:
Hymenoxys acaulis
Chrysopsis villosa
Osteospermum
Scutellaria Dark Violet
Berkheya purpurea
Nice, Seq. Unfortunately, we're done here. 19 degrees this morning. I realize that's balmy for Pseudo and others. But it kind of marks the end of our season.
Next three nights @ 27 for me. That might be enough to kill off everything else too. Yikes! 19 degrees? I'm not ready for that yet. I did just put on the snow tires this weekend though.
I can't put my finger on it, but your naming has a common theme...
Damn the bad luck! Do deer go into rut later in Missouri than Wisconsin? It seems like fall coloring and deer mating should roughly overlap, but maybe that's not the case. Sorry, I digress. The maples here were splendid (three Flower in the first and Red in the last two).
BTW, your Pistacia chinensis is exquisite. That tree is a complete unknown to me, but I sure like it. Does it have a downside?
Even in Illinois, the deer rut season is tracked county to county by the rural fm radio stations for the hunters, it does happen on different weeks. I am re-enjoying the fall displays. Though the fall flowers were totally absent from roadsides this year after hwy crews doused roundup along the roadeway.
Late fall has been very mild thus far, but we've had enough hard freezes to make fall color seem very distant. It's time to start posting pictures of conifers. :)
