Lily turned yellow

Mountain View, CA(Zone 9b)

I planted 5 lily bulbs in pots while the others are fine, one recently turned completely yellow. Is it dying? What should I do? I put it in the ground today hoping it'll recover in a sunny spot.

I would guess it is just "retiring" early. Many plants' leaves turn yellow, or whatever colors,
at the end of the growing season. After all--it IS October! I can't believe it!!!

I, personally, would not worry about it. BUT--that is just me!

This is normal. Have you noticed any trees turning yellow? That's what this lily is doing. They're not evergreens - instead the foliage dies to the ground and regrows in spring.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Dont remove the dying foliage from ANY type of bulbs, allow the foliage to die down naturally, when it is dried you can gently remove the bits so they dont get blown around by wind, allowing water etc to get into the neck of the bulb and maybe cause rot.

By allowing the foliage to die down naturally, it allows ally the goodness from the greenery to return down to the bulbs underground to build up/feed the bulbs giving them stamina for making the flowers and foliage for the following season.

Another tip is, when planting bulbs, add some blood/fish/bone meal to the soil as this is a slow release natural feed, you can buy this as a ready mixture made into powder, Plant all bulbs 3 timed the depth as the bulb measures, that is IF the bulb is an inch in size from root end to tip, then it should be planted 3 inches deep. this applies to ALL bulbs unless otherwise stated, not to be confused with tubers, corms etc as these are a separate identity regards to planting and are NOT bulbs.

Hope this helps you out when buying and planting different plants.
Have fun and enjoy your new gardening hobby.
Kindest regards.
