Summer Cascading River Birch Wilting?

Hilliard, OH

We just planted this river birch a week ago, and now the leaves are starting to wilt. I thought I saw webbing on some of the leaves yesterday morning, but they were gone that afternoon? Is this just part of winter?
Thank you guys again,
Will

Does not look good.
Has the young plant been watered correctly?
Too much?
Not enough?

Remember that the roots have not spread out into the soil, yet, so you need to water the whole root ball, the whole volume that was in the can, plus some extra so the surrounding soil is moist.

On the other hand, too much water can also show as wilting. Roots need oxygen as well as water. Constantly watering to the point of excluding oxygen can kill the plant.

Rain can do the same: Not enough, and just the top of the soil gets a bit damp, but the plant is too dry though the roots. Too much, especially noticeable if it puddles, can drown the plant.

If you are seeing webbing you could be dealing with Spiders Mites. Even if you don't see webbing SM could still be the issue and they will make the leave look just like the ones in your pics. They don't like a wet environment so spraying the leaves a couple times a day with water will help to get rid of them.

Watering could still be an issue but when you said you saw webbing it caught my eye..

Thanks guys... I gave the tree a great watering yesterday... fingers crossed.

It's been terribly dry here and lots of things wilting. Newly-planted trees need watering at least every other day for the first two weeks.

Terrible dry makes Spider Mites even more of a possibility, just keep spraying the leaves when you water.
