I think they are annual. I've collected maybe 50 seeds from the three plants that went to seed. I'll toss them out there again next year. Being in zone 5, well I can't even imagine what you can grow there that is deer resistant. There is info for deer resistant plants online. The deer problem you have is probably much worse than what I'm dealing with. Our deer are small and we really don't have many of them. I don't see them everyday. In fact I think there is only one young doe that is coming through my yard this year. The drought hits the wildlife hard, I caught her with her head in my birdfeeder yesterday. I let her eat what she could get out and went out refilled it for her if she comes back.
CLOSED: 2915 FALL SEED SWAP INTEREST"
Hi Seed Swapers-I would like to join this for the first time. I have a few questions-
1- do I make one big bag of each species and then people take out a few seeds or do I make a bunch of individual packets?
2- where do I get such little baggies? I save my seeds in paper envelopes, I have some for coin collecting that work great.
3- How many seeds are considered an acceptable amount?
4-I have some packets of commercial seeds from last year that I never opened, should I add them in?
5-I saved a bunch of seeds from things this year that I have never sprouted so I cannot guarantee they are good seeds, is that OK?
Maybe there is a thread that explains the rules?
I am so excited, now I will go make my "Have List"
Hi Pistil,
Glad to have you aboard! :o)
Here is my input, and DJ or others may wish to add theirs as well.
1. It's easier all around if you can divide the sides into individual packets, unless you have alot of a few seeds and just want to donate them to the robin/anyone who wants to take some. I have seen it done both ways, but DJ as the " hostess" can chime in here.
2. I get 100 little ziplocs (approx 2x4?) in the craft dept at Walmart; Michaels and AC moore also have them. Walmart is $1 per pkg of 100. Other people have gotten them off ebay if they dont live near any of these stores.
3. Generally 25 minimum seeds are considered acceptable; but depends if the seed is really "exotic" or hard to come by...but if you have a good "crop" of seeds, I err on the side of more than 25/generous.
4. I would say commercial seeds are definitely a great donation.I dont think the robin is just limited to those from your garden.
5. Are you questioning the viability of the seeds? If so, it'd be good to do a germination test with the coffee filters/paper towel DENO Method, but if you saved them from your garden but just have never grown them yourself (ie they are 2015 saved seeds?) sure, you can donate some. DJ mentioned that all seed from 2014 (and previous years??) should be marked such, but 20-14-2015 seed is preferred.
Cant wait to see your have list....and to get the robin going (I know, I have a while)..I gotta start packing my seeds! :o)
Val
TY Val for summing this up for Pistil Our NEWBIE:)
Let me just say that commercial Seeds are fine to add to the robin .
& I Perfer Everyone to Use The Plastic Baggies I will have some in the robin & If you are in an area you do not have a wal-mart or Hobby store then Feel free to let me Know I will add extra In the robin & When it arrives you can Put A $1. In the Pouch & Take out a Pack of 100 of them .
Now as for the size of Baggies You can Fill a Sandwich Size Baggie with a Special Kind of Seeds then ok BUT NO BIGGER .
all Seeds MUST Be As CLEAN AS You can get them A Little Chaff Is ok .
Pistil : Please Send me your ADDRESS With Address in the title line .
Will be posting haves and wants a bit later today, just wanted to pop in and say for anyone who likes to start plants from seed, this is such a great swap and hope you will join. The variety of seeds in the box can truly be overwhelming.. but that's half the fun!
Deejay.. strawberry jalapeño jam!! Mmmm mm that sounds good! As for your friend with the hosta seeds, I'd love to try a few! I've tried to start them from seed before but had no luck.. and I second froggy.. garden club sounds fun! We have a master gardener club here but I'm afraid my gardening skills would be the laughing stock hehe
Dee, regarding your mystery plant, just a wild guess would be polanisia dodecandra, aka clammyweed. I may have put some in the Robin last year and it kind of fits the description. It's a drought tolerant cousin of cleome and looks like it a bit. It makes your hands smell and hence the name clammyweed lol. I attached a pic, not mine, for reference
Becky thank you for the name of the plant if that is was dee is talking about & If you can any seeds for this I would love to try Them . polanisia dodecandra they do look sorta like the cleome family :) & I Need or would like some RED & The White Cleome if anyone has any .
Thanks for the info, DJ! Enjoying Disney. Be home Sunday to start putting my seeds together!
Enjoy your Vacation Julie I have enjoyed your Pic's on FB :)
chat when you get home have a safe trip.
Pistil : I Meant to tell you that if you have ALLOT Of one type of seeds Like MARIGOLDS You can Put them into a 2x3 Baggie or a Sandwich Baggie, to share I Just ask everyone to be sure to SQUEEZE Out as Much air of the Baggies you use so that they do not POP open in Flight we do not need a Messy ROBIN & If this dose Happen I do hope that it can be cleaned up before shipping to the next person on the list .
Also wanted to ask How you all feel about Just Haven
individual Baggies to separate the seeds by
Perennial- Annual or
Flowers-Veggies- Vines- trees/bushes
or
Do you each want to put in your own individual Baggies with your Names on them ?
Please Give me your input as to how you thing it would be better for you .
So Far we Have about 13 players & There is 17 more days for anyone to sign up yet . so I hope to get your in put on this Thank you all . & Have a great day .
For me separating them into "types" won't be much help and sorting what I'm putting in takes more time. So I think just putting in your bag makes more sense.
I agree with Dome/dee....most of us know what's an annual or perennial etc and if I come across something I don't know, I just Google it to find out if it's something I can grow
thats is good to know for i think it might be better if we just have a couple 3 large baggies then 10 -20 so flowers will be in one veggies in another , trees.shrubs vines in another .
that way everyone can just take out what they can use & add what they have & Do not have to open large baggies from everyone '
thank you for input .
Hi Everyone! I'm excited about the seed robin....been collecting seeds all fall!
I will do whatever everyone wants....right now I've been filling my bags and labeling them....just let me know how you want me to sort!
Wait..I think I either misunderstood dee, or dj...
I thought it was easier to just put in our own bag of goodies vs. taking the time to sort into annuals, peren. , trees ets, but I will do whatever everyone wants. I go thru all the bags in a seed robin anyway, be they bags with donor name or by plant type so it doesn't make much a difference to me.
I was trying to avoid having to sort all of my stuff into other bags. But it really doesn't make that much difference to me either. I go through everything one at a time and look up anything I don't know what it is. Doing three bags is OK, even I can sort into three bags.
Question...What about seeds that a designated for specific individuals? Just wondering how that will work.
well i Thought Maybe if I Just put Flowers on one bag veggies in another & trees / bushes / vines on another it would make more room in the box & maybe less postage for us .
Still would like for everyone to PLEASE Put your Name / DG Name on your seed Packs that you put in the robin .
we can try this way for the Robins 1 st few stops & Then let me know how you like the way he is Packed if not we can change it back to you all putting your own packed seeds in a your own baggie .
How i'm not confussing our newbies you will see when the robin arrives it is easy to go through :)
I will Put a Baggie with everyone;s addresses & use it to put your envies with seeds & Name of who they are for . if you have seeds for anyone who has already had the robin before you then you will have to send those seeds to them .
time is flying turning very cold they say warmer today so i hope to get the last of my seeds collected.
Well my zoey is here so you all have a great day .
I just subscribed and would like to join the robin....let's be honest - I subscribed TO join the robin :)
Anything that veteran participants can share would be appreciated. If I have questions should I post them here or send them to someone?
deejay - I am going to try to figure out d-mail to send you my address, what else do you need from me?
Thanks in advance to you all! I'm so excited!

Val
Just got back from Disney and had a wonderful time. Need to gather my seeds this week and get them ready! Good to be home! :)
You know, when I first read DJ's post re: the robin, I thought "wow, early November is really FAR away" (I want it ALL and I want it NOW! LOL!) But I sure am glad of the timing as I still have seeds to sort/clean and pack! Got a good jump on this the past week while on vacation, tho!!
I would like to join the Fall Robin. It will be my second Robin, and I enjoyed the Spring Robin immensely.
Welcome Timmijo : Please Send me your Address
ALso would like for everyone to know that this is an Honor Robin to be fun & Usefull to all & So if you take a pack you replace with another type of seeds so Do Not take 5 types of seeds & Replace with just 5 pks of just one type of seeds . there will be many baggies filled with seeds where you can take out a teaspoon of seeds Do not take the whole baggie .
SAMPLE : if there is a full baggie of maybe Rose of Sharon then please do not add More .
Please Note I'm not trying to be rude in anyway we would like to see Variety of seeds for everyone to be able to have the chance to try new plants in their Gardens .
NOTE: All PKS Must Have Your DG/Name On them Also Let me know if you want to go through the robin on a second Time around .
any Q Please ask .
Thanks for the tip Val, I have been to plant swaps with a friend and like the mid-Atlantic crew!
DJ - do we make up individual biggies of seeds (how many to a bag? - a teaspoon?) Or just a bag that people can take out of?
For your “sample"...are you saying don't add to that bag...which I don't think we do, or don't add more of that type of seed to the robin.
What does the robin start with?
Thanks for answering all my questions
If I am early in the robin I would like a second look
Tim
I Just didn't want anyone to add More of the same type of seeds in the robin when there is plenty to go around . if you see there is just maybe one small pack of some seeds you may add more of them .
if you have enough seeds to fit or fill a 1x2" baggie so everyone can take out what they can use . there will be Baggies in the robin to use for anyone who do not have any .
If you have Just a few of a special type of seeds you would like to trade for other special seeds you can ask on our have & Want list ;
Link is above .
ya all have a great day
susie
Susie,
I dont think you're being rude in any way!As the robin "moderator", I think that newbies need to know the rules so that the robin is a good experience for everyone. I know when I was a newbie, I didnt have as much to trade, but I went and bought some seeds so that I would have some things to exchange. It's not fair if someone takes alot and replaces little, as there is less for everyone after that. The robin is all about finding a wide varieties of seeds in one place, but one has to be fair also! Now --I-- sound rude! LOL. Not meaning to be.
Marta, I think 25 seeds minimum is the "rule" of thumb in most fair trades (robin or otherwise)--or a teaspoon of most seeds seems more than fair; prolific seeders (you get more seeds, you offer more seeds) If the seed is from my garden and I have plenty, I tend to err on the side of adding extra; If It to share, I think of the kind of trade/size I would like to receive.
If you get the robin and there are max. 5 bags of the same kinds of marigolds and/or there is a big bag of marigolds, dont add more of the same type of marigolds. If the robin has 5 packets of white rose of sharon, but you have pink, you add up to 5 packets of pink ROS (or larger zip if you want people to be able to take more)
Just my 2cents
val you are right there are many types,& colors so if there is a Pink Rose of sharon & You might have white or Blue then yes you can add 3-5 pks or put blue in one pk & White in the other pk . But be sure to mark the color / Variety .
Just want to wish LAVINAMAE A SPECIAL BITHDAY WISH
May your day be filled with Lots of Happyness .
I just checked this thread so I understand The Rules. I thought I would try to get my packs all separated and labeled ahead of time. I bought a bunch of little bags at Michaels.
Questions:
1- Is label to be stuck on outside of pack? (old thread for prior Robin said put inside)
2- Many of my seeds are 'open pollinated' seeds from a named cultivar. If I write Cosmos bipinnatus 'Sea Shells' OP would people understand?
I like the idea of the robin going around twice, so I/we might get seeds from people after us in the robin. Sign me up for that.
I shouldn't keep hijacking the thread and not letting Susie answer, but Pistil, I have seen the labeling done both ways. I had never thought of putting a label (pc. of paper/description) INSIDE til then, but it works well. Mine are marked both ways, depending on when I packed the seed and if I had the sticky labels and typed/ran off on the computer :o)
I got my little baggie (about 2x3)at walmart, 100/$1 which is a good price, but someone has been buying them out! One walmart only had bigger ones; and the one near my work only had 2 packages left. They are in the crafting aisle with beads, etc.
evening everyone So Far I Have 65 VARIETIES to start the robin with sorry its so dark & Hard to see well , but here is what I have done so far I Type out my Info in my word pad then print them off cut them & Tape them to the packs .
yes you can put the info inside the Pack ,But i have found that it gets lost in the center of seeds & hard to read . but do what is easy for you.
I Like taping to the outside only because it is easier to read.
I hope this helps the newbies as you can see some of the pks are very large & I'm sure there will be plenty of seeds for all in the robin .
I managed to lose the post, well I'm back now. Not clammyweed, flowers look more like white snap-dragons only they gape more. And they really are stinky, my fingers smell bad just getting the seeds out of the pods. I'll try to remember to get a picture of the them, even without the flowers someone may recognize them from the seed pods.
Welcome back Dee there really is not as Much chatter as we use to have & Partly my fault .Busy Month but not going to take all the Blame :) hehe I Know the Rest of you are also under the Crunch of getting your Gardens Cut back for winter.
will try to get back in later Have a date with the Lab this morning
DJ, I still have to gather, clean, and pack my seeds! Been so busy since I got home from Disney! I plan on gathering them today and cleaning tonight. I'm excited about this swap!
Does anyone have moonflower vine?
Thanks, Julie
Julie I am pretty sure that I do Will look when I get home from work
Thanks, Kathy
Kathy if you might have a couple extra Maybe add my name to the list for a few MV Seeds , 5-6 plenty for me .
Well, I got that pic of the mystery white flowers posted in the plant identification forum. I sure hope someone recognizes them.
