I have a Harry Lauder's Walking Stick Contorted Filbert that I have pruned back to make a taller plant. My question is how do I get the cuttings to root? There are quite a few green growing branches that were trimmed. Can I just put them in water, or should I use rooting hormone and try to plant them to get them to root? I love this shrub and if I could get more to grow in other areas, I would be one very happy gardener. Thank you for any info you can impart.
How do I propagate Harry Lauders Walking Stick
Hi arekaybee-
I had hoped someone more knowledgeable might speak out, but as nobody has I will try to help.
I looked in my books about cuttings of this species. It appears that cuttings are best taken in summer in active grove, say in July, and treated with rooting hormone. Success rate is not great. Another book said That mature cuttings 9these are generally taken in winter) are kept wrapped in damp moss till spring, then stuck in the pot over bottom heat. So this may not work.
But, it might- I would remove most leaves, dip them in rooting hormone, and place in a pot with some kind of very well draining thing like perlite mixed at least 50:50 with potting soil. If you have it spray with fungicide, then put a gallon ziplock over it, and place in bright shade. You will know in a month or two if it works.
From my books, it appears that layering is a pretty sure thing with this plant. Sept-Oct is the correct time for this, so you might try that to make more that could be planted out next year!
