I had never planted Watermelon seeds before,so I did not know what to expect as far as the vines go.Is it possible to cut the vines to keep them under control?

Not a good idea, but when they are young, and flexible you could bend them gently (do not break them! and see if you can make them spiral around.
You can also grow them on a trellis. Use something like nylon stockings to support the fruit. Make sure the trellis is very sturdy (to hold a watermelon!)
