weed grasses problem

Berkeley, CA(Zone 9a)

In the spring I was unable to weed my flower garden as I was busy planting my veggies. Now, of course I'm inundated with tall weed grasses bursting with ripe seeds. I'm weeding now but just touching spreads 1000s of seeds and my clothes look like a grass seed catalog. So even walking through the garden is spreading the seed everywhere. The only thing I can think of is to spread Preen on the areas I have weeded. I have some mulch (not enough)I can add, also.
Any help here?
Thanks

Can you gently collect the seed heads into a dense mass, then hold them over a bucket or garbage can, then cut them off?

Put a bag over the seed heads and tie it off, then cut off the seed head?

Get a lot more mulch, of almost any sort.

Unfortunately they are all over a very large area.

I have found Preen to be very helpful when I have done this. Highly recommended.
Then spread as much mulch as you have. Also if in an area not too noticeable, newspaper or old cardboard.

In a large area there is not really an effective way to remove the weeds that does not also spread the seed. So, yup- preemergent and mulch.

Weed, and weed, and weed, and keep weeding until they are gone. Then weed some more as seedlings emerge.
Funny that we are supposedly in an age of such acute environmental awareness, yet the use of herbicides seems to always be the first resort, rather than the last, as it should be.

Unfortunately I have the same problem as dun. This is the second season that I've had weeds (grass) in one of my gardens. I think it was brought in with dirt that I got from a new place, the spring before last. Anyway, there is no way I can weed in 100* temps and I have a medical condition that limits my movement. Sometimes I use herbicides bc I have no other choice. The grass grows through the mulch and bugs hide in the mulch. They over winter there.

I know a lot of DGs that use herbicides they dmail me but don't post for fear of starting a debate.
Not everybody's situation is the same.

It has not been made apparent that any similar circumstances are in play here.
"No other choice" says it, as opposed to the very first option considered.

Weed seeds can live in the soil for many years, with only a portion of the 'crop' sprouting in any one season. Constant vigilance and being able to remove the baby weeds as soon as they show is not always possible.
Preemergents and post emergents can be very helpful in controlling weeds.

My son came in from mowing and his clothes looked like a seed catalog too. Lol All I could think of was this is going to get worse before it gets better.
