Will heavily layered newspaper, followed by a layer of compost, followed by a layer of mulch kill Bermuda grass? I really don't want to resort to Roundup. Thank you.
Bermuda grass
No.
Round up, clean out all you can, water and maybe even fertilize to make more grow, and hit it again. The more actively it is growing the more thoroughly it will circulate the weed killer.
I was afraid of that. Thank you so much. Off to the big box store.
That bermuda grass is some tough stuff. I have some that I've been trying to get rid of for a few years. I pull it out by the roots because it's in an established perennial bed. I'm not sure how it got there but I think I'm winning the battle.
You give me hope.
I can't even start on it now because it's much too hot at 100°. I read somewhere that it can grow up to 3 feet under ground. That's insane. LOL Once I've made a huge dent in it, I will resort to hand pulling and digging. Even though Scott's assured me you don't have to spray twice, if you use the concentrate, I am dubious.
Congratulations on the huge progress you've made. I want to put in perennial beds too. Again, you do give me hope; thank you!
If you can spray it with RU, I would encourage you to do is now while it is so hot. The RU is even more effective in the 100 degree heat.
Oh, The agent at Scott's told me to wait until it was going to be 85 degrees for several days. I will go buy it now. LOL After being told it would only take one application, I'm not a big believer in their information. Thank you for the heads up!
In my experience, grass and weeds die faster the hotter it is when you spray Roundup. In the spring, RU works so poorly, I usually use boiling water instead. I try not to use RU when it's less than 60 degrees out on the regular.
The plants need to be metabolizing pretty well for RU to work. Given that bermuda grass is somewhat tropical, I would water it well, then spray no matter what temperature it is.
A week later, hit it again.
Make sure to read the instructions to be sure to use a strong enough concentration. The 'ready to use' products on the shelves are too diluted.
