Hi there. I was wondering what procedure you all follow when propagating aloe vera from cuttings. I tried last year, and they rotted. The Christmas cactus I grew from cuttings did great! Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
Propagating aloe from cuttings
You need a whole rosette (however tiny) to start a new aloe plant. Leaves or pieces of leaves do not work. Did you start your plants from an offset?
I followed some instructions online. They said to cut a 3-4 inch piece of aloe and let the end dry for a week or so. Then it said to pot them about 1 inch in, and I forgot the rest of what those instructions said, hehe. My current plant is just 1 wopping rosette.
You're going to have to wait until the plant starts making pups. Which it should do pretty soon with good care. Aloes (unlike the related Gasterias and various other succulents) cannot be propagated from leaves. Aloe vera is a little unusual in that it cannot be propagated from seeds either, because humans have been separating clumps of it for many hundreds of years.
