Excessive Rainfall and Carrots

Dundee, MI(Zone 6a)

I planted Scarlet Nantes carrot seeds 5/17 and only 3 had sprouted by 6/18. Over the last 3 or so weeks my region has had excessive rainfall and my yard has flooded. My carrot plots are on the edge of my garden and a little lower than the rest of the crops. They suffered from a small amount of flooding more than once. I sowed some more seeds 6/19 in hopes of starting again, but it rained that night- hard. What are the chances that my seeds have washed away? Do you think that the flooding is putting a halt to germination and growth? I grew carrots successfully in this same area of the garden last year. Thanks!

The flooding could sure do that.

Can you build a box or mound that is above the water draining off so the carrot seeds are not disturbed?

I should have made a taller mound before I re-planted on 6/19. Crud. I would do it now, but I am low on seeds (organic heirloom variety), and I want to see if the new ones that I planted will sprout. There are 3 that actually sprouted after the first round of flooding, and today I noticed a few more tiny, tiny sprouts. The beds are sloping a little, so only 1 row really gets it, 1 row has a little flooding, and 1 is okay. I hope that the little sprouts can get strong enough this weeked to deal with the round of storms that are coming next week. What a wet summer it's been here! I am surprised that msot of my other veggies are doing so well. Thanks for your reply!

Make a trench on the uphill side to divert the water.

Garden is back to a normal moisture content, haha. As far as I can tell, all of the sprouts that were present prior to the rains are alive and growing. There are also more sprouting! I am surprised. Thanks for your earlier input. I will definitely take your advice into consideration when laying out my garden next year.
