question about grass clippings as garden mulch

I've recently decided that it might be worthwhile to use grass clippings as mulch for my garden and raspberry patch so I don't have to spend so much time weeding (and with all our rain, it's been difficult to get in the garden to weed). I'd probably use a thin layer in the garden and a slightly thicker layer in the raspberry patch (possibly over some newspaper to kill of the grass that's trying to grow there but can't be mowed because of fencing).

My question is if it would be a bad idea to use our grass clippings because I know our lawn company uses herbicides (last application was about 3 weeks ago or more and was supposed to deal with broadleaf weeds)? If I mow today, could I use the grass clippings or not? I've read some places that you can use it if it's composted first but I don't have room for that. My garden is mainly peppers and tomatoes with some beans, carrots and lettuce. What do you think? Safe to use my grass clippings or not?

Using grass clippings that have been sprayed with herbicides is not recommended.If you can find it,I like to use hay and/or straw(straw is usually cheaper).

I wonder if I can get a bale of hay (small square bale) from my parents. I'd have to transport it 2 hours but if hay (alfalfa) makes a good mulch, I may try it. Although I probably don't need that much so maybe I can just get part of a bale.

Sounds like a great idea.My dad makes both hay and straw so I have a great source.I use hay or straw for all my mulching.I love it.

seems like a long drive for a bale of hay, but maybe that the way it is in NE. No commercial mulch nearby?
