We have a new yard planted in December, two hard freezes and now a LOT OF RAIN. My yuccas are not making it. These are the two worst. What should I do?
HELP my yuccas filamentosa are, well, YUCCA
It's likely the excessive rain that did them in, rather than the freezes (the species is very cold hardy). It doesn't look like there's much you can do. The crowns appear to be totally rotted and the only green is a trace in the outer leaves. It doesn't appear that they've produced any offsets yet (due to the recent planting), so I'm pretty sure they're a goner. Normally, they're pretty hard to kill and will produce offsets from the deep roots even if the top flowers and dies out, but given the soaking, that seems unlikely.
If they were well established, AND you are patient, Id just let them be, at least give 'em a chance. In SW NM, I dug up a root as deep as I could (around3 ft), and smashed the rest with a sharp axe. That year we had a record breaking 20 below zero, then my yard flooded several times in July monsoons. 2 years later, a strong healthy sprout came bursting through. They are hardy beyond description, and being native, might easily adjust to the changing conditions.
You could just cut off or pull out the rotted-off parts, and replant the area. Any deep roots that might potentially still be living will sprout when they're ready.
